The cover of The Stranger this week made me smile.

Now, this isn't to say that I think that no one who doesn't live ins a city is instantly an unthinking hick. I know that isn't true. Some of those people are family. Some of those people are good, good friends. This cover, however, does make me smile and helps me remember that there is a reason I live in this city. That there is a reason that I prefer living in cities. Ideally I'd live in a forest fo my very own about 20 minutes away from downtown. I have to go a bit further out than that but... I don't mind living in the city. I can always drive out to the trees. They aren't that far.

Anyway. I feel a little better about things. It helps me feel better until I can get some money. Completely making my Christmas list today, too.

Happy Friday!

I read most of this week's Stranger online, and I loved it. I am not a city girl; I am wholly and entirely a product of the suburbs. But I love living a few minutes from a big city, and I don't think I ever want to live further than an hour from a big city. I love public transportation, and adore the fact that I can BART into SF and Muni around there if I want to. I love the vibrancy of cities, the people, the sheer STUFF that's in cities. Unfortunately, I also like having space and being able to not worry if I'm disturbing someone else, so I don't know if I'll ever be able to truly live in a city. But I love cities, and I think I generally think the way city people do.

I'm right there with you. Being raised in Palo Alto, I adore being near the city, without having to live among the overcrowding.

Wow, A Confession OR Now It All Fits

I should have guessed that you were a product of Silicon Valley.

I'm not a suburbs sort of person. I don't really like them. I would love it, however, if I could live in a place like where my parents are and have it ... like... 20 minutes outside of a large city. I know it doesn't work that way but it would be nice.

Frankly, I despise the city.
Well, the bigger the city, the less I like it.
I was a backwoods boy and I miss it quite a bit.

Big Lake, Samish Island, Bayview.

I live in the city as a necessity.

I do see the good of it. It's just not what I prefer.

The city is okay, and while the commute is horrid, I love living in the backwoods of the foothills. Sure, we are rapidly becoming part of a town, but a town is different than a city.

Hmmmm . . . But Where Does This Leave Me.

What if you are not Democrat or Republican but you are Green and a Cascadian Seperatist. Now the the issue expands.

I LOVE CITIES. But there are a lot of problems with cities, especially the way that we instist on doing them in America. Those of you that love towns (Bellingham size and smaller) need to do one thing that can be summed up in five neat little words GET YOUR ANOTOMY TO ENGLAND! Wait till you see how they do them here. The best examples that I have seen is Norwich with Cambridge as a close second. Ely is pretty neat too.

I'm with you on the seperatists issue. Since I'm outvoted though, I'll take the Stranger suggestion of telling the "coutry," areas of the country to get off our collective urban dole, get the fuck out of our politics, take that Old Testiment asshole of a deity with you, and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

BTW, ideally I'd love to see a BC to California/Mexco border Cascadia, but I'll take any combo that gets us our sovergienty and away from the rednecks trying to take it away (and living off my tax money to boot). Where would you put the borders and why?
