Really?

And some interesting art from the Wednesday Comics book DC is putting together: http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/03/23/more-wednesday-comics-art-surfaces/

The Hollywood Reporter says that Sci-Fi Channel has greenlighted a new try for "The Phantom." The project will be a four-hour movie which, if it is well received, will then spin up into a weekly, like BSG did.

Summit Entertainment announced today that Twilight sold over 3 million DVD units in its first day of release.

The L.A. Times says that there was an explanation for Six's red dress in the finale. Did anyone see that? I think I missed it....

Dollhouse had the first episode that I really actually liked last week. Kings is seriously strong stuff. Sarah Connor Chronicles had a fantastic episode as well. Most of the TV I watch was pretty kick ass last week, which was nice.

Food for thought - Why is it I love Superman movies and Superman cartoons but the comics, for the most part, do nothing for me?

I am of two thoughts of the CBR image:

1. YAY! Jean's back! (For some reason I've been missing her, and I don't typically even *like* her.)

2. Poor woman, her right breast seems to start on her shoulder.

Yeah. I have a lot of problems with Land's art. It was fantastic at one point and has been getting worse and worse. And Jean... I'm sort of torn on Jean coming back. I could write pages about it, likely.

Yeah, actually my very first thought was 'That must be a Greg Land piece, but it's eh' before I got as far as 'yay' or 'oh dear lord what has happened to her boob?'

As for Jean's return, well. It used to annoy me that they'd kill her and bring her back ad nauseum, but after she started being code-name Phoenix I kind of went 'well okay. Anybody named Phoenix is going to keep coming back' and accepted it.

I *am* a bit disappointed that she's coming back after Emma's been outed as a Bad Guy After All, because I don't need another wash-rinse-repeat with Scott and Jean, but I'm sure we'll get one. Ah well. :)

Add in that Maddy's around these days and it gets much more interesting, I think but really..... Lord. It is getting as old as the Rogue and Gambit yo-yo.

I really need to sit down and read the months of X issues I've been letting sit idle. See, I alphabetize my comics and when I get new ones, I add them. So, when I sit down to read them, I seem to never get to some letters...

Yes, this. What Kit said. x 2.

I LOVE JEAN. And I hate what they've done to her. Though Kit has a point about the Phoenix thing.

Yeah. That's ultimately why I'm okay with it but still... Nnnnnng.

I would like to choose to ignore the whole Emma-Scott thing, because it made me want to spork my brain out.

From: [identity profile] mizkit.livejournal.com
I actually liked the Emma/Scott storyline, because he apparently *moved on*, which was nice to see. So I'm not at all delighted by the idea of going back to the ZOMG JEAN IS THE LUFF OF MY LYFF thing again. I would like to see Jean--who I don't like; I've got some kind of thing against red-heads in comic books, apparently--cut loose a little, which essentially means pairing up with Logan. I mean, really. She's the most powerful tepe/teke on the planet. There is not actually any given situation (barring a helmeted Magneto) in which she shouldn't just lay the smacketh down on the bad guys. I'd like to see some of that instead of, well, goody-two-shoes Jean.

One possible explanation is that Superman's whole concept is about the epic sense of wonder, and when you have a soundtrack to go with the visuals, it's easier to hit that sense of wonder than it is solely with the images.

As for Jean, well, I've seen her fake-rezzed before by a Mastermind, and Bru/Frac recently did use a Mastermind...

Oh for heaven's sake, let her rest in piece already!

I realize comic fanboys (and girls) can cling to their favorites beyond all reason, but is it really that hard to come up with new interesting characters and storylines that weren't first done a quarter-century ago?

Date: 2009-03-23 07:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
Well, old favorites tend to sell better than new characters.

And she has been dead for like a decade or something this time.

That can't be true, Endsong was just a few years ago. Wasn't it? Am I that old?

Date: 2009-03-23 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
Endsong was 2005, you're right but I'm going from Mags killed her, which is 2003/2004. She didn't actually stick around after Endsong and it was a seperate sort of thing. So, I'm still off by a chunk. Still, 5/6 years isn't bad, considering her track record.

I really want a quasi-non-canon miniseries that's just the X-Men having to hammer down an increasingly zombie-like Phoenix every issue.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
Well, they are going to do a Marvel Zombies 4....

You know what I want? CSI: Gotham.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wandelrust.livejournal.com
Ugh. Marvel Zombies has lasted far longer than it should have. It was funny and somewhat disturbing the first time, it was mildly amusing the second time, by the time they hit Marvel Zombies vs. Ash it was nausea inducing.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
It wasn't really my cup of tea to start with. While I like zombies that was a bit too much for me.

From: [identity profile] elsewhere7.livejournal.com
And there's the problem which partly led me to giving up comics in general. I like certain characters, but they're not the Big Name Heroes.

So, I have to wait around for when they might appear and hope they don't get killed off, or hope they are written right. Usually, it's for a scene, or I have to look around for single-panel appearances.

And, there's few people to commiserate with about it, because they're not the Well Known types.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
I certainly have characters who fit into that but I also like enough mainstream ones that I stay with those comics. I also find that, while I like characters, there are writers who I will read almost anything from and writers that I won't read even if they're writing my favorites.

Re: Superman: He's actually his most fascinating to me when he's part of a team. Though maybe that really speaks more to the quality of the previous JLA run up through Syndicate Rules, minus Pain of the Gods and The Tenth Circle... (bleck esp on that last one)

Yeah, my main reaction to that one was, "Byrne, Claremont... the 80s is calling and they want their comics back..." X( I finally relented and got myself to break up my collection and get rid of the JLA TPBs I would never read again, which is pretty much Pain of the Gods, Tenth Circle, and the Crisis related stuff at the end.

I'm there with you on the Superman thing... I read the comics for the year leading up to the Doomsday fight and then for the year after until his return and that was probably the best it's ever been and I kind of felt I'd never need to read Superman the rest of my life after that. Of course, now that James Robinson is writing I started reading again, and even he can't seem to make me care about the character. I'm about to drop them from my list.

Well, I just picked up Action because I like Greg Rucka's stuff. I'm realizing I have NO idea who these people are. I will have to do research.

surprisingly, I find of the three books, I kind of enjoy Supergirl the most... and I may keep up with that one on its own if it distances itself from the other books a little. The continuity has been tight the past few months so that if you read it on its own it would be like reading every third issue of something.

Date: 2009-03-23 08:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
Interesting, as Supergirl is the one I'd be least likely to pick up for a number of reasons.

Date: 2009-03-23 08:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jeffrey.livejournal.com
You know what, Supergirl has mostly ONLY been good the past couple months. I've had to review every issue of the series for Superman Homepage and it's been largely crap since it started.

As for the Superman issue, my guess would just be most of the comics are crap (and I say this as a huge Superman fanboy).

Have you considered giving... radio dramas a try? Ahem. ;)

I haven't, actually, though I may well be interested. I'm not so good with podcast sorts of things, I've noticed.

The beauty of podcasts is you get a program (like iTunes or something less annoying) and they grab all the episodes for you and you don't have to do anything. Although manual downloading, if that's your thing, is cool too.

If you ever feel like checking them out, drop by pendantaudio.com

I would be thrilled to hear your thoughts on the stuff we're doing.

I only started reading Supergirl when Sterling gates took over. I talked to him and JR at Baltimore Comic Con and they convinced me to give it a try. Plus, Silver Banshee right off the bat, I love that character (and she was one of the few I did the art for in the Vs. CCG)

Date: 2009-03-23 08:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jeffrey.livejournal.com
You're an artist? Cool.

The book has only been consistently worth reading since Gates started on the book. Rucka's one issue was good and there were a couple others that were decent here and there, but on the whole it's been thirty-some issues of train wreck.

I hadn't read anything that bad until Trinity came along... and Trinity, of course, puts all other books to shame when it comes to being the worst comic ever. ;)

I wouldn't make too much of the cover.

I think the last Superman comics I read were part of Doomsday, since that was the last EPIC event, and the last time Supes actually seemed... super. But, in the comics, most of the other JLA members are on par with him by now, thus he seems less special.
