Wow. I packed a lot of stuff into my weekend. My weekend needed an extra day for me to do nothing. That's what I think.

Friday I left work early in hopes of picking up X-men Legends and getting the emissions testing for my car completed. Well, that wasn't in the cards because I'd left my lights on and the battery was dead. So, I got a new battery for the car. The coolant light Holly said not to worry about is actually making me worry a little bit since the engine temp never really seems to register much. To pile all the car things all at once, I am also fairly certain that the spedometer is lying to me. I'm not sure by how much, though. I'll have to have someone in the car with me and try to time it.

Saturday I got the emissions test done and then picked up X-men Legends. I haven't played it as much as I would like to but so far it has been a whole lot of fun. I'm sure I'll be playing that some more this week and during the weekend, since I don't ahve anything planned this weekend. (Back! My free time! Mine!) Then I went to EndFest with Kris and Jim. We had a good time and the bands, for the most part, were excellent. I'll post about that seperately at some point. There is some music I have to find, though, because the bands were that good.

Yesterday was sleeping in some, playing Civ some and then helping Steve move. Helping Steve move was more and less than I was expecting it to be but that's cool. The U-haul truck didn't want to start and so I made it start. Don't ask. I don't know. I just think the vehicular gods owed me something back after the rest of the weekend. Then Steve took us all to dinner and I had yummy, yummy steak. Mmmmmm. Yum!

So, Happy Birthday [profile] c_jyd and Happy Birthday [profile] grymor.

And for those of you who read down this far, have a present.

Figuring out the speedometer is actually pretty easy. Get on I-5 and drive 60 MPH for a few miles. Look at your watch when you go past a mile marker. If it is accurate, every time you pass a mile marker, your watch should be at the same second. If it's off by a lot, then yes, there is an issue.

Well, yes. But I don't have a watch. I'd rather just pay attention to driving and let someone else do the timing.

Don't have a watch? How odd.

I had a rental car last year that got messed up every time it went over a mountain pass. It started thinking every mile I travelled was only .6 miles. The cool thing about it being .6 is that if I looked at the kilometers part of the speedometer I'd be able to approximate my speed pretty accurately.

Actually that would be another way to test it. If you have a trip odometer, reset it at a mile marker and see if it goes up exactly one mile for every marker.

True, true. I could do that too.

So what makes you think that it's inaccurate anyway?

The fact that I was following the moving van yesterday and had to be going 70+ on my spedometer to keep up with them and when I asked them how fast they were going they said 60 - 65.

That and anytime I drive anywhere, everyone passes me like I'm standing still.

hmmm...actually...

Seems like that would just test the accuracy of your odometer, which isn't really in question.

Go out at night and have a friend drive a separate car (preferably a new-ish one) along a quiet street in front of you. Agree on a speed in advance, then see if you're riding her bumper or falling behind. Try it at a couple speeds and make sure to use enough distance so small differences in accuracy can show up.

May you have better auto karma soon!

Well yeah but I found that the two were connected. The speedometer was off because the odometer was off.

My weekend seemed to /have/ an extra day in it. Perhaps I got yours?

Woman, the fact that you are still worried about the temperature thing tells me that you have not driven for a while. :)

I promise that the coolant is fine and that the temperature sensor also works fine--the car stays nice and cool during most driving conditions, but heats up some in crowded city traffic or stop-and-go freeway stuff. At such times it heats up, but I've never seen it approach a dangerous temp. Things are as they should be.

Hey, with all the money I've now put into this car, and I'm no where near done, I don't want anything else to potentially break on me. I don't have the money for it.

Gotta go get the spedometer checked some time.
