Entertainment gossip.

So, Fox let go of Bryan Singer to go do Superman. This left X-men 3 high and dry and seemed... a little odd for a movie they've been advertising already. It seems... that they might have had another director in mind. One that is currently writing an X-men comic book. One that has a film that will be done with principal photography in like a week. And he's someone that the folks at Marvel have wanted for a movie for awhile.

Joss Whedon.

It's something to think about.

I think he'd do a wonderful Phoenix Saga. Don't you? Just the right mix of tragedy and hope... and Joss /wants/ to do it.

People at Marvel? People at Fox? Hook this up!

Anyway. Mission Impossible 3 looks to be on hold so Tom Cruise can do War of the Worlds with Steven Spielberg.

Leo DiCaprio's next movie is going to be set in the '30s and with gangsters. I think that's a good move for him...

Anyway... I have work to do. I just had to share the news.

Joss Whedon is responsible for the stupid, stupid Storm line in X-Men, and while he claims that it was supposed to be delivered flippantly, not portently, the fact that he wrote a flippant line for Storm does not fill me with actual confidence that he knows what he's doing with the X-Men. He knows what he's doing writing Kitty Pryde, but Emma Frost sounds like Spike, for God's sake. I want Fox to get Guillermo del Toro to direct it, personally, but I should be so lucky.

OTOH, Whedon would be a Whole Lot Better than 99% of directors out there, because he *is* a comic book geek, and I've come to the conclusion that successful comic book movies must have comic book geeks for directors. He's got the right passions, at least.

The thing is, if that line had been delivered sarcastically, it would have been a freaking great line instead of the dud that it was.

I like the way he's writting Emma. Recently people have forgotten that she's not a nice person. I don't see him writing her as Spike since Spike got all of the /good/ lines. He's writing Beast correctly as well. Beast is the one who never wanted to join in on this merry mutant escapade - he tried to cure himself. Logan is Logan. It's hard to mess up Logan. I like the fact that there is more depth to Scott as well. He's been flat for far, far too long. He and Emma aren't perfectly happy, either and that's nice. They shouldn't be.

So far, I'm really liking Astonishing.

I think Joss could do a great job with it. He knows how to make people feel for characters and I think Phoenix is right up his alley, right in his strong suit - Buffy's death and rebirth were both amazingly powerful events.

Storm is not well known for her sarcasm, either. :)

I'm enjoying his Astonishing run fairly well, actually. I think he does have a lot of the characters right, and I'm pleased with the whole Beast storyline. I happen to be quite fond of Emma, and I think that when she doesn't sound like Spike, she's at least interesting, and the Logan/Scott/Emma relationship is a good one. If Whedon ends up doing X3, I'll be sad because it's not Singer but I'll be glad that it's not, you know. More or less anyone else. :)

Heh. C'mon. Storm has had ber moments. Punker Storm and bad-ass Calisto Beat Down Storm has had some pretty pithy lines.

I agree. I will miss Singer but at least they'd be replacing him with someone who has sown that he /cares/ about back story and would want to get it right.

Okay, but the movie Storm is so far from mohawk Storm that it's not even funny. And really, one wouldn't characterize Storm as sarcastic, even if she has her moments! They've *all* got their moments, but Storm's schtick is more the Portentous Speech thing.

(Not that I should talk, with Rogue being my favorite character. Sometimes even I think she should shut up!)

But yeah. Joss is a comic book geek, and when you get down to the line, that's what *really* matters. Kevin Smith pissed me off endlessly, but it's a pity he didn't get to direct Daredevil.

Actually, it's a pity they cast Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock, but that's a whole different rant. :)

That's what happens when you keep one line of a script. Things seem suddenly crazy and out of character. *grins*

Oh yeah. Yeah. I'm there. Bullseye was pretty good, though.

I have to admit that I'm pleasantly surprised by Whedon's run so far. At the very least, his storytelling is quite cinematic and I like that. I'm still trying to determine how I feel about how he's writing the characters.

Emma is the weak link, I think. I don't think she's written like Spike but then again, I don't think she'd quite right yet, either.
