I've seen it. And I don't even watch hockey.

Normally, the stick is legal, and the player who called for it to be checked gets a penalty for delay of game.

I'd seen it once, and it held the game up, and the announcers made a big deal about how rare this was and how at least one player was guaranteed a penalty from this call. And on and on and on.

It was a good move.

If the stick is illegal, Avalanche get a 5-3 power play. That frees them up to skate (their biggest strength - the Avs are much better skaters than the Red Wings). if it doesn't work out, it goes to 4-4, which frees up room on the ice, which means more skating.

Either way, the advantage was to the Avs.

Of course, it really didn't make a difference...

I don't know if I'd say the Avs are much better skatters, I think the Wings are faster on the ice, but I will give it up to the mad skillz of the Avs, but it's not like they skate circles around The Wings...
