There are just some bands that sound like themselves. You know who is playing it even if they are playing some other bands stuff. That distnctiveness is a big part of catches my attention.

What are some bands that have a sound so distinct you recognize them, even if you've never heard the song before? (Some bands catch distinctiveness by changing their sound all the time and just being ahead of the wave that rushes up behind them. I'm not counting them for the moment.)

For me AC/DC has to be one. Aerosmith is certainly one. I'm not doing well at this sort of thing this morning. I'm sure I'll come up with more later.

Giving blood later! Yeah me!

Really? Huh. The Cure probably wouldn't have been on my list.

I haven't noticed it as much with their newer stuff, but you can totally tell frm the older stuff.

True. The older stuff I'll grant you.

I'd have to go with Pearl Jam (and I know I'm in the minority here, but I just don't like 'em). Then again, the Prog rock of the 70's and 80's is pretty defining. Who doesn't immediatly recognise Pink Floyd or Supertramp? Or maybe I'm just dating myself.

I liked Pearl Jam's early stuff. Later it just didn't do anything for me.

Pink Floyd is a good one. Not so sure about Supertramp, though.

I tried dating myself once, but I found that I was cold and unresponsive when I tried to show affection and often let the toilet seat up, so in the end, it didn't work out.

Try Earth, Wind and Fire. Recognizable bass-lines.

Besides, you've gotta love boogie wonderland :)

Social Distortion and the Tragically Hip. In both cases, it's the singer's voice that catches me.

The Beastie Boys are unmistakable for anything but the Beastie Boys. I'd say the same thing about David Bowie, but mainly it's a voice thing for him. And....hm. Who else? Alice In Chains, I think. They had that really unique discordant-harmonics thing going on. I've never heard anybody else do that.

Ooooh... great question!

U2 - Such a distinctive guitar sound and Bono's voice is easy peasy lemon squisy to pinpoint. The newest single I hadn't heard before or heard who it was and I said, 'Oh my god, U2 have gotta new album out! YAY!' and it was bought within the week! :)

Also, Suede is another distinctive one for me. Again the sound is distinctive... but also Brett's voice...*melt*

Hmmm.... Bush as well is easy for me to notice because of the gruffness and there's a certain roughness to the music as well..

YAY! I LOVE music discussions, thank you!... *BOUNCE and hug*

I've noticed a lot of these groups are because of a distinctive singer. I was wondering if there are any groups that you can call because of guitar riffs or something else.

I know it's possible, but not for me. I'm as close to tone deaf as you can get and still enjoy music.

Cowboy Junkies- and not just because of Margo's voice(wonderful as it is). Even on those tracks where Michael is singing, there is a tone that is just disticntly them. IT comes through when they cover others music too. You can always tell the Cowboy Junkies.

Very few people tend to think of the Cowboy Junkies, heck it seems very few people know very much about them at all. Such is life.
