The early reviews for The Spirit are not good. In fact they're worse than 'not good'. Reading a few of them we've sailed past Catwoman in terms of badness factor. Which is really, really saying something. There was even a comparison to Battlefield Earth. Yeah. That bad. I'm sure it will be pretty but I'm not sure that's enough to save it if the reviews are true.

Speaking of Catwoman, the rumors around Batman 3 will not die, no matter how many times Nolan says he's not there yet. Unnamed Warner Bros. sources are claiming that Rachel Weisz is being considered for the role of Catwoman. Not a horrible choice, I have to say.

Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have officially signed to Tron 2.0.

Merlin, a new series that NBC will air early next year, just got a second-season greenlight from the BBC, which is FANTASTIC. I've heard nothing but good, good things about this show and I can't wait to get to see it. John Hurt and Anthony Stewart Head are both in it as well.

Summit Entertainment will release New Moon on November 20, 2009. They're rushing forward on this and it feels like a mistake. Your lead actor hates his character, you've got a new director who's last movie did very poorly.... Sounds chancy to me. Still, millions of screaming fangirls are willing to throw money at it.

Not surprised about Spirit. I've seen the commercials, I've seen the trailer, and it seems cornier, and worse acted, than "Batman and Robin".

Really glad to hear about Merlin, though. It's a fantastic show. *Way* off from the legends, but that just keeps it fresh. I'm not sure how well it'll take with American audiences, it seems to have a low budget compared to most American shows.

I completely agree about Merlin. Anyone expecting a lot of accuracy with regards to the existing mythology may be disappointed, but if they are willing to accept a very creative take on the series they will be pleasantly surprised - much as my wife and I were. Everytime I though the series might be painting itself in to a corner BAM! The game changes and I was pulled back in.

Yes, the special effects at times seem a little low budget, but they are consistently better than the effects were in Charmed at the height of it effects game.

The fact that no piece of advertising I've seen for The Spirit (I haven't seen a trailer) has contained ONE SINGLE THING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS IN THE MOVIE was a hint that perhaps not letting people know about or see the movie before it opened was deliberate.

Other than "HAY THERE'S THESE CHICKS THEY LIKE SEX". You know, the bits we saw everywhere during SDCC.

And I suppose there's the "HAY THERE'S THIS GUY HE HAS A LONG COAT AND A RED TIE ON".

Other than that...nothin'. He could be a greengrocer in a long coat and red tie, maybe they're a crew of daring WWII aeronaut-ettes with zeppelins, fuck it I don't even know. Pigeon farmers.

Not even the early review that went on at great length about why it sucked mentioned anything that happened other than Scarlett Johannsen dressed up as a geisha and somebody else dressed as a samurai walk back and forth for five minutes while somebody commits seppuku in the background.

I'm sure you know more about it, apparently it's based on a comedy character--is it supposed to be a comedy?

No.

The comic is funny at times but it isn't primarily a comedy.

I am so, so pleased for Merlin fans. I can't wait for it to come out in the States.

But will it be a better vampire movie than "Queen of the Damned"?

I'm really not surprised about The Spirit. I'm not even that familiar w/ the comic, and I really felt like Miller was just rubbing his Sin City all over a comic with a totally different idiom, and it wasn't for the better. Every commercial/trailer I saw for it made me less and less interested.

A Spirit movie would have been nice, but instead we are getting Sin City: The Golden Age.

I'm not really sure they could do a movie of The Spirit and capture the way Eisner really played with the medium. Heck, once it really got going, Denny Colt was kind of like Morphius in that he sometimes had only a brief cameo in his own comic.

I just hope the stink of this film doesn't reflect on teh crunchy goodness that is the original comic.

Yay! A second season of Merlin. I've been watching the first season and it's a really good show. I studied Arthurian legend in college and I've been quite pleased with what I've seen so far.

btw, I have the whole season saved on the comp if anyone wants it.

I might take you up on that but I have a lot of X-Files to make it through.
