So, currently, I have a BluRay player. It is super keen but I have to figure out this Live thing. I haven't investigated just yet.

But, back to topic.

I'm going to minimize my rebuying on BluRay because not everything /needs/ to be super HD. (Though The Dark Knight is gorgeous. Thanks Mom and Dad! The IMAX scenes are soooo pretty.) What do you think is pretty enough to warrant HD?

I'm trying to put together a list. I'm hesitant on older movies since I don't know how much they'll be improved by the experience. For example, I would LOVE to own Temple of Doom on BluRay but I don't know if it would actually help.

Any insights? Thoughts?

Can't you rent Blu-Ray discs from NetFlix and such? I think you can, and then you could see how much the video quality is improved on older movies before deciding if you should buy them. Maybe?

Not a bad idea. I will investigate.

The answer is yes -- you can request to have Blu-Ray versions of movies on your queue sent rather than DVDs. I can do that on my list and add something if you want to test it out.

Hmm.

Well, WALL-E looks gorgeous. Any other favorite animated films you'd like to own on BluRay?

Probably all Pixar ones, though maybe some Disney - Lion King comes to mind.

Speed Racer, sure. Wanted, I sort of hated.

I'm trying to think of other FX-heavy movies....

Transformers, maybe? Clone Wars?

Maybe Transformers. I'd have to watch it again to see if I really wanted it.

What model player did you end up getting?

The Samsung BD-P1500. I'm aware I'll probably have to update the firmware to get BD-lLive to work.

Exactly correct. :)

The BDP1500 is a good unit, and Samsung has made their Firmware updates pretty simple:

I'm still not sold on this Blu-Ray thing.

Tell me how 300 looks, though.

So far Iron Man and The Dark Knight are amazing, TDK a little more due to the IMAX factor.

We just got the Samsung BD-P2500 on sale as our major Christmas gift. One of the first movies we got to go with it is the new release of Sleeping Beauty that comes with both a BluRay and a regular DVD disc. I was absolutely stunned at how much work they must have done to restore it because it looks amazing on BluRay. The colors are rich and vibrant and everything is crisp and perfect. It's nothing like the washed-out, cropped version they put out in the VHS days.

I'm going to definitely grab some older movies on BluRay through Netflix for the same reason, since I don't want to rebuy everything only to be disappointed.
