Number One - I want some debate on this because I have been debating it myself. By the power or for the honor?

EDIT: This is what comes from thinking everyone can follow my train of thought. (Which sometimes I can't do.) Would you prefer to be 'by the power' of something or 'for the honor' of something?

Both of them convey a sense of being a champion of something, being invested with something....

Number Two - Sort of on that topic, I don't think anyone is buying me the He-Man She-Ra Christmas Special... So ... I think I'm going to go see if I can track down a copy for myself. It is a weird left over from childhood passion of mine... I love me some She-Ra. And Frosta. Frosta was awesome.

Number Three - I have traded the tired for the stomach problems. Not so much problems as exaggeration of normal standard issues. I just have to not eat what got to me again for awhile and that'll work out.

And... ummmmmm. I think that's it.

I know, sweetie. I should have clarified my question, I think.

I'm wondering whether you would prefer to 'by the power' of something or 'for the honor' of something. I can totally see the benefits of both.

I just always thought it was so typically gender oriented that he was by the power and she was by the honor. I personally would choose power because I feel like part of the power is the honor they put forth but that just me :)

And don't mind me if I'm slow today, three hours of sleep is not my friend lol.

It is gender oriented, the way they did it, certainly.

I just... I don't know. I think about these things too much.

By the Power. For the Honor implies that you're fighting for, possibly defending, Grayskull, and sounds like a paladin-y/fealty thing. By the Power implies being imbued by Grayskull and sent forth to fight with it, so I see that as being much more pro-active and useful for defending the downtrodden and smiting Congressional Republicans.

Fair enough.

I also think that while, For the Honor is more defensive, it also makes me think of duels and defending a lady's honor and laying the smack down on people.

You know, it always sort of annoyed me that he-man was by the power and she-ra was for the honor when I was a kid. As if he-man was more directly linked to the powerf of greyskull, or something. I don't even remember what I thought it meant, exactly, just that it was different, and hers sounded softer, and boys would tease me because she-ra wasn't good enough to be by the power, or something.

Anyway, as an adult, I'd much rather be for the honor. By the power sounds like you're greyskull's butt-boy, and you're a wimp without the strength it's imbued you with. For the honor sounds like you're independantly badass, and have chosen to use your badassery to defend Greyskull.

I still, however, suspect they just picked a softer sounding word for the girl character.

Date: 2005-12-21 05:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
Excellent.

I think so too. They used the different word because she was a girl but I never thought that honor was a softer word. Maybe because I has always been caught up in the knights and honor and chivalry stuff even when I was a kid. And when I was a kid, I would get that from the boys too but I always thought She-Ra was cooler because a) she had a sword that could turn into other things and b) she had a horse... that could /fly/.

Flying is awesome. And as cool as Battle Cat is... He can't fly.

Interesting point, there, though.

From: [identity profile] catwoman980.livejournal.com
Oh, at the time I thought she was much cooler. But, when the boys are running around screaming "But he-man has POWER! Honor is stupid!" you can't really argue with logic like that. Especially not when you're seven. Explaining the meaning of the word did no good against rebuttals like "OH YEAH, well girls SMELL BAD." Mainly I'd just hit them with my plastic she-ra sword, which is probably what I'd do today as well, had I such a weapon at my disposal.

The word just sounds softer, really, when you say it.

And yeah, battlecat had nothing on swift wind.

Man, even her toys were cooler. Those same boys always wanted to play with them over the he-man figures.

Heh. When I was younger I ONCE played the damsel in distress. It was the most boring thing ever. I was in the castle all... not allowed to go anywhere or do anything and so I just sat there the whole time.

Crazy. I decided right then and there that I wasn't ever going to be the damsel in distress again. Because it was boring.

Yeah, I was always stuck being the Sorceress when we played He-Man. (We did not play She-Ra, I don't know why.) About all she gets to do is say "No, you mustn't!" when the heroes are going to do something stupid, and come congratulate them when they win anyway. BORING.

My thinking on it is that you have your own code of honor. Why have one externally imprinted upon you when you can get the power to back your own up?

Date: 2005-12-21 05:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lithera.livejournal.com
It isn't getting someone else's code of honor, as I've seen. It is defending your honor, Greyskull's honor, the Sorceress' honor... I don't see someone else's honor superceeding your own.

But He-Man does all that, too. Did their powers differ in any way?

Well, She-Ra's sword had some cool abilities that his didn't have. Other than that, they were generally the same.

Oh!

I totally forgot. She-Ra could heal as well.

Date: 2005-12-22 12:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jameel.livejournal.com
Damn, she gets healing, too? So, she's got a shapechanging sword (makes sense because she has a shapechanging enemy), a flying horse (though both worlds have personal flying vehicles, and Battle Cat probably kicks more ass in a fight), and healing? Do I recall correctly that He-Man had super-leaping? I wonder if she's any weaker than He-Man.

*checks Wikipedia*

JESUS! He-Man tosses mountains around and has lifted Castle Greyskull! Yeah, if I were statting them out, he'd be stronger, but she'd have those other abilities.

Ignoring the preconcieved gender bias inherent in this quesion, I'm going to go for "for the honor of" instead of "by the power of".

To say that you're doing something "by the power of", it implies that you are somehow powerless (either physically or executively) to do these things otherwise.

To do something "for the honor of", yes you are tied as a vassal / defender to this thing, but the power to exectue and decision of how and when to execute is within you, not external.

So, He-Man is POWERED by Greyskull, She-Ra is INSPIRED by Greyskull. I'll go with the inspiration to be cool as opposed to getting magic coolness conferred upon me any day!

By the Power, for sure.

Both have the Power, but only She-Ra has to worry about the Honor of Grayskull too.

With great Power comes less responsibility. :)

For the honor.

That implies that you're doing something good, while "By the Power" implies that you're doing something because you CAN, not because it is good.

Soo... Yeah. Of course, if you combine both, it kicks ass.
