The Oracle says: Neil Gaiman has a Bacon number of 2.

Neil Gaiman was in American Scary (2005) with Mark D. Newman
Mark D. Newman was in Apollo 13 (1995) with Kevin Bacon

So, I think I have a Kevin Bacon seperation of... 3.

What? Were you in a film with Neil or something? Met doesn't count, or everyone in Hollywood has a Bacon number of 1.

Now, I actually do happen to have a Bacon number of 3.
I was (an extra) in Under the Boardwalk with Sonny Bono
Sonny Bono was in Airplane II: The Sequel (1982) with Pat (I) McNamara
Pat (I) McNamara was in Sleepers (1996) with Kevin Bacon

Well, if met doesn't count.

I've never really been in movies or TV at all.

Ah well.

If met doesn't count, I'll be a four again as soon as Phish release the Brooklyn DVD. You can see me in it, and then you can do the Trey path.

I wouldn't have /been/ in it, though.

That's my path, not yours. You need to get up front in more concerts and hope one gets released ;)

Or, I have a legit three.

When I was a kid, I appeared on an episode of Professor Kool's Fun Skool. I was only a Cub Scout for like 3 weeks mind you, but that was long enough for our troop to appear on the show.

This episode of PK'sFS became kind of legendary. They reran it a lot. Let's just say that my ability to make a fool of myself in public started when I was very young and I'm REALLY glad that we didn't have a VCR yet. (Should I tell the story about the braces and the balloon game... probably not).

Anyway, Professor Kool was played by Stu Kerr and:

Stu Kerr was in Morgan Stewart's Coming Home (1987) with Paul (I) Gleason
Paul (I) Gleason was in She's Having a Baby (1988) with Kevin Bacon

I hadn't thought about that in years to be honest. It was an event that I try to forget.

On the other hand, I DID win Sigmund and the Seamonster Shrinky Dinks. W00T!

Does being in the same movie as Bacon count as 1? I thought that would be 0, since that means 0 degrees of separation from Bacon. Which makes Neil's separation from Bacon only 1.

That's the way I always think of it, because I always say I have 1 degree of separation from Kevin Bacon. I was an extra in The Two Jakes with Jack Nicholson, who was in A Few Good Men with... Kevin Bacon.

Kevin Bacon has Bacon number 0

A person is a node in the graph, and being-in-a-movie-with is an edge in the graph. The Bacon number is the minimum number of edges that need to be traversed, or infinite/undefined if no path exists. Thus,

(Kevin Bacon) <==Apollo 13==> (Mark Newman) <==American Scary==> (Neil Gaiman)
      0 1 2

(Kevin Bacon) <==A few good men==> (Jack Nicholson) <==The Two Jakes==> (tomthedog)
      0 1 2

Somebody's probably gone and figured out how close Kevin Bacon is to being a "good" center, although I'm not sure how you'd define that precisely. Probably the person whose number within the graph minimizes the average separation distance, taken over all connected people.

Hrm, only people I've ever been in a film with that has also been in anything else would be the members of Cypress Hill, Nirvana, Pearl Jam (minus Eddie Vedder), half of Alice in Chains, and a couple small Seattle bands I don't remember. Not sure what else any of them have appeared in with any crossover.

Damnit, I'd feel more comfortable being closer to Kevin Bacon on this test than I am to Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson on the sex six-degrees thing.
