From Variety:

"Paramount has inked a lucrative, exclusive distribution deal with Marvel for films based on the comicbook publisher's remaining characters. ... Among the first of its superheroes headed for the silver screen: Captain America and Nick Fury, an American version of James Bond."

Wow. How did /Paramount/ pull that off?

"Marvel has never produced a movie on its own until now. To fund its slate Marvel arranged a seven-year $525 million revolving credit facility with Merrill Lynch Commercial Finance Corp., secured against the movie rights to 10 comic-book characters, including Captain America. Paramount isn't putting up any production money; it will receive a fee for marketing and distributing an initial 10 movies, the first of which is expected to hit theaters in two years. To ensure the maximum possible audience, none of the movies will be R-rated."

Interesting.... Interesting.

Have you seen this trailer for Batman Begins?

Okay, it doesn't answer Why Paramount?, and it IS DC and not Marvel, but it DOES make me REALLY want to seet this movie.

Yes. I have.

I've been excited for this movie since I read the script.

From the press relase I read, it sounded like two of the movies were "Captain America" and "Nick Fury" (an American version of James Bond).

Though a combined movie might make sense, I think they would both be better served in their own.

I think they'll be getting seperate movies. Marvel is going to produce 10 movies and these are the first two and Paramount will distribute... At least that's what I'm gathering.

I truly hope the new Captain America is better than the last movie that came out.

*shudder*

Then again, they really have nowhere to go but up...

And, lest we forget: I saw this and remember praying for death.

I have it on tape. I've never watched it. I keep it around in case I ever want to MST3K it.

...Nick Fury, an American version of James Bond? Wow. Not in my universe.

Yeah. Not really in mine, either.

I mean, ok, I do admit that the Ultimate Nick Fury has completely overtaken the original in my little mind. Like, whenever he shows up in the original books I'm like, "Uh, why's he white?" But even with the incredible radness of the Ultimate Fury aside, *James Bond*? o.O

However, I hope they do a movie and cast Samuel L. Jackson and make him as ass-kicking as he oughta be. :)

That would be pretty sweet. Still... James Bond isn't ... well...

Yeah. It's just bad.

Nick Fury, in a story by himself, is closer to the Bond / Superspy genre than he is to the Spiderman / Superhero genre. Sure, he's very different, but this is Hollywood we're talking about. High Concept. They think Hitchhiker's Guide is "Star Wars with jokes"

I did indeed.

I've read the script and I know that there are things in here that will be... ugly and dark. I have hopes but...

Well. I won't know until I see it.
