Today is Ash Wednesday.

What are you giving up for Lent?

I'm not Catholic or any other tradition that follows it, but I've typically made the promise of giving up sex for Lent. Of course, I wasn't normally having any, anyway.

I think I'll give up processed sugar for Lent this year.

Come on! Be original. When I was a Freshman in Catholic school I told Sister Jerome I was giving up Catholicism for Lent. I claimed it was the ultimate sacrafice since I was giving up any chance of getting into Heaven. She didn't appreciate it.

But it's all been done. Give up something more obscure and original.

For instance, 90% of men leer from time to time. Yet I've never heard of someone giving "leering" up for Lent.

Does it work if you give up being catholic for lent? I mean, then lent woldn't matter and you could go back to being catholic. But then lent would matter again, and you'd have to give up being catholic, but then...

Well, when I did it when I was.... 14? It was the last time I was part of Catholicism. After that, I subscribed to Atheism.... and then several years later I gave that up for Lent too. I figured it was more of an organized religion than catholicism.

Let's see. Something that I will really miss. I would try coffee, but that would be much worse than quitting smoking, and I need to have some sort of vice in my life. Now that I hardly drink and don't smoke, if I gave up coffee, what sins could I give my body to??

Geeze. This is hard. Maybe it's because I was raised Lutheran, and we didn't have to give anything up.

I could give up common sense, but I might get hit by a car or something. Although, I do know a hell of a lot of people who live their lives without an ounce of common sense, so I suppose it can be done. I don't think I'll try it.
