Depp is so...nyar. There's not really any words other than "wierd" and "androgynous" to describe him so far. I honestly don't know if I'll enjoy this or not. Of course, I wasn't all that fond of the first one. Although the first one made me look at the books in a much different light. I used to think Willy Wonka was nifty; now I see him as insane in a not very settling way.
He doesn't seem much thinner than Wilder was, though I could be wrong.
I think Wonka burns up a lot of calories through nervous energy. (Especially in the Great Glass Elevator, Wonka spends a lot of time running about, IIRC.)
I've just recently gotten the original from my sister to watch with my kids. And Gene Wilder is ... weird in that show. And very strange, and he dosn't make any sense. I think this is a good, eery, Tim Burton-ey interpretation for that oddity. It'll take some getting used to.
And Depp looks like he's had something done to his teeth... ?
Deeply disturbing, but I'll still have to see it. I brings out the darker side of the book which I appreciate. I wasn't too fond of the Wilder version after I read the book since it was too happy and bright where the book was not.
Wow, it looks like once again Tim Burton is on a mission to ruin another classic movie by trying to make it better just by adding special effects and redoing the script. I'm going to stay away purely, because I can't see anyone but Gene Wilder in that part.
