heh. it's also 'dia de la raza' which my calendar translates as 'day of the race'. I asked my mexican american friend if it was a boat race or what and he laughed and explained it's more like 'day of the ethnicities in the americas that columbus thought of himself as discovering', that it's a chicana/o holiday developed to parallel marking the old world coming to the new.

I stil like me asking if it was some kind of regatta though.

Let's see...Columbus came to the Indies and because of his "discovery" a genocide of indigenous people occurred. Also, entires island nations were enslaved generally made miserable.

Coming out day...uh...people discover their bravery and their hidden identities are sacrificed?

yeah, I was trying to think of something like that, like, enough time has passed that white americans can think of columbus coming in kind of a mixed feeling way (nice to live in a democrazy, sucks to have destroyed other people); gay people no longer in horrible situations the same way?
