In case you haven't seen it elsewhere...
Jul. 28th, 2004 09:57 amBarack Obama is cooler than you.
"A belief that we are connected as one people. If there’s a child on the south side of Chicago who can’t read, that matters to me, even if it’s not my child. If there’s a senior citizen somewhere who can’t pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it’s not my grandmother. If there’s an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It’s that fundamental belief—I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sisters’ keeper—that makes this country work. It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. “E pluribus unum.” Out of many, one."
There are people who make me believe that the system can work. And he's one of them. Interestingly enough, most of these people are of one minority or another. I need to read more about Kayln Free.

Date: 2004-07-28 11:58 am (UTC)I stiil acutely remember when I was a counselor at a Girl Scout camp. We had people from other coutries come over and be counselors as well. We got to talking about politics and one of them (and I cant'remember where she was from anymore) askwed "We only started vote.. less than fifty years ago and we've voted in two women. What's wrong with you guys?" It was kind of funny and kind of sad.

Date: 2004-07-28 12:55 pm (UTC)Just to let you know in the spirit of full disclosure, I am an independent in the middle, I have some conservative leaning and some liberal leanings. In the last few elections, I have voted for equal numbers of Dems, GOPs, men, women and everything else.

Date: 2004-07-28 06:52 pm (UTC)I don't think Hillary is going to run. Sure, she's ambitious, but she also has some questionable details in her past, and friends in high places that would prefer not to be dragged through the mud. Her husband was enough of a target to give her some protection, and make her a sympathetic figure in a lot of people's minds. She caught some of the flak and investigations, but nothing like she'd get running for president. VP I could see, and she'd bring a recognizeable name with a lot of support to the table. She'd probably also help the women's vote in a lot of places, which is getting bigger every year.
The nice thing about Obama is that no matter what happens this election, he'll have at least a term in office in a state that isn't as widely noted for being liberal, like Mass., and he's young enough he can wait two terms or more. But its good for the Dems to get some names out now, since that's been hurting them lately. And its nice to see Dems like Obama out there with a similar platform to mine, which is to say, mostly socially liberal, and economically moderate.
