I went thru a Catholic school system when I was growing up. Every year we were asked to give up something for lent - not being Catholic, I didn't take it too seriously. The priests would get upset when I told them I'd be giving up things like 'homework', 'smoking', 'picking my nose', etc...eventually, I realized the best thing to give up was Lent, itself, and I've never looked back ;-)

Typically I give up something I won't miss for the time period but will be pleased to indulge in after Lent.
