Dear President Bush,

I would like to thank you personally for helping me with my workout this evening. I thought you made some good points in places. I want to know how you will accomplish the things that you promised but that's okay. I'm sure we'll all hear about that later. More Pell grants for higher students who challenge themselves and helping fund higher education is great.

When you talked about your faith based initiatives and changing the Constitution to ban gay marriage however, you helped much more. I have no problem with churches and the role of faith in the community. I get a little leary of putting religion and politics together. It walks a line that we specifically tried to avoid when founding this country on those values you liked to mention so many times this evening. Saying that the will of the people is to ban gay marriage consitutionally, to protect it from 'arbitrary' decisions by judges caused my heart rate to increase and me to go much much faster on the elliptical machine. The sanctity of marriage cannot be ruined by people who love each other respecting and re-enforcing it. It is things like Who Wants To Marry A Millionare and The Bachelor which are ruining the sanctity of marriage. (Though it had to be gone for some time for those programs to reach the air in the first place.)

By the way, No Child Left Behind is a lovely idea but it doesn't work unless you do it correctly. Also, drug testing in schools is a horrible idea. And while funding programs that teach abstinence is a great thing, I would also like it if you taught safe sex as well for those kids who are going to be doing it no matter what you teach them.

Anyway... I'm going to go do something else now.

Well, bitching about the judiciary is a quick and easy way to gain their ire and ensure that the Supreme Court will, once the case is brought before them, smack down the requested amendment to the constitution.

If you try to amend the constitution in a manner that is found to violate it, such as eliminating due process or something like that, it doesn't fly. Supreme law of the land and what not. You're allowed to expound the constitution, not outright violate it.

But if you amend it, then it supercedes what it used to say. To use an obvious example, the 21st amendment completely violated the 18th. There's nothing preventing a new amendment being passed saying that the 1st is null and void.

Except when you're a law student and you're mixing up state constitutional amendments with US constitutional amendments. Then you just feel stupid. ;)

Apparently not. He wants a constitutional amendment protecting the sanctity of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Or so he said in the State of the Union address.

It's sad but true that even Democrats are leery about championing gay marriage. The poll numbers in this backwards-assed country are against them.

Mmm.. I need new ears because I swear Bush said "blah blah blah I will do whatever the states end up doing regarding this issue because I don't want to make my own opinion and be screwed in November blah blah blah" and everyone, including the Democrats in the middle that never stood up, stood up.
Well, shit. That was the only part that I liked. Damn it! Now I can say that I completely wasted an hour of my time. Grrrr.

He's motivated me (over the course of his four years) to look into absent balloting for this election. And no, I won't be voting for him...

If it weren't so serious, it would be funny. Actually, I'm still waiting for someone to come out from behind him laughing and saying he was a Muppet the whole time and it's all been a very very bad elaborate joke.

Apparently, there are a lot of times when absentee ballots aren't counted because they won't make a differenece.

I don't know; at least absentee ballots have a paper trail.

This is true. They get counted last and if some schmuck has already won by a certain amount, they won't count them at all. *grumble*
And wow.. now that you say it, that guy screams "I'm a Muppet! Save me!"
