Rant about a comic book...
Dec. 29th, 2003 01:16 pmThis has no importance in the real world at all.
So, I picke dup new X-men 150 because I wanted to see what Grant Morrison did in his conclusion to his stupid plot arc.
It really still feels like this man has year and years of hatred stored up for these characters and has been waiting for the chance to write them for years.
In this plot arc, he brought back Magneto, who he killed earlier. There are times when a character can be more effective dead than alive. Dead he inspired a whole generation of mutants that maybe, just maybe, he was right. That caused all sort sof ripples through the world.
Then, things go on and we find out that Magneto didn't die. Oh no. He escaped and had been hiding in the Xavier Mansion the entire time. He was just wearing a mask that protected him from telepathy. So no one suspected that the guy who was doing everything by gravity and magnetics was Magneto.
So, Magneto is on drugs this entire time and obliterates most of New York City. He starts killing humans wholesale... while on drugs. He defeats the X-men with ease and reshatters Charles' legs. (This is after Morrison healed them in the first place.)
Then Wolverine and Jean are thrown into the sun. Instead of letting them burn up, Logan guts Jean with his claws causing her to die and thus become all Phoenix-like. Okay, I can buy that... So.. That's Jean death three, right?
Jean flies them back to earth and they confront Magneto who is losing hold of his new generation of acoltyes because he's on drugs and he seems to have gone freaking loony toons at the same time. So, they're talking Mags down and trying to get him to back off. Scott stops being a pansy for a few moments and his powers work differently than they ever have before and then he chooses Jean over Emma. (Which took him like a year to do.)
Then Jean moves towards Magneto to comfort him or something and he kills her. (He essentially causes her to have a stroke.) Then Wolverine goes freaking crazy and kills Magneto by cutting off his head. Scott becomes a bigger wuss and Jean dies. Again.
So. In the end. All of Grant Morrison's writing has accumulated in not much at all - Jean's death, which is possibly the largest cliche in comic books. He killed Magneto and then brough him back and killed him again. Broke Scott and Jean up and then brought them back toghether again. Had Wolverine go nuts and back again....
*sigh* He'll be done soon. Thank goodness.
Claremont will move to Uncanny X-men. I'm not sure what will happen to X-treme, whether he'll continue writing it or not. They still haven't announced who will take over for Morrison. All I can say is trained monkeys could do better.

Date: 2003-12-29 01:43 pm (UTC)Bringing her back took all the power of it away. Sacrifice can still be as important if you're going to come back but it has /never/ been handled that way for Jean.
All of the characters in X-treme are all acting very strangely, Rogue in specific. In Uncanny they re-wrote Nightcrawler's origins for no good reason at all...
Anyway. I'll stop now.

Date: 2003-12-29 01:51 pm (UTC)But for the sake of my childhood and all the love I had stored up for the old characters I remember, I would love to find Morrison and fuck his shit up.

Date: 2003-12-29 02:25 pm (UTC)Flicked through X-men 150 on the stands. Put it back. But then, I gave up on mainstream X-books almost ten years ago...

Date: 2003-12-29 02:30 pm (UTC)Of course, you see, I started reading X-men about 14 years ago.. so...
Honestly, I'll be happy as soon as Morrison goes away.

I'll stick with Athena Inc.

Date: 2003-12-30 12:18 am (UTC)It didn't say who Scott chose. He said that he -had- chosen, but got interrupted before he could tell Emma who it was.
God.
This entire storyline is.. -so-.. out of character for pretty much everyone in it.
Then again, in Uncanny.. mm. Naked She-Hulk. Yum.

Date: 2003-12-30 06:28 am (UTC)Well, they're as much back together as she is with anyone. He went looking for women that looked like her, she found him drunk in a bar, she slept with him and left to go undercover killing Coda.
