So, I had an idea last night and this morning.

It is going to involve a lot of reading and that is something I am good at. I am going to do a lot of research and I'll see if I turn anything up at all. Right now, I think I will attempt to recruit someone else in this.

When I have a better working theory, I will be sure to let you all know.

To sum it up as I have it right now: There are issues in society right now that seem to be glaringly problematic. I want to see if I can track down the societal changes that makes these things possible, even acceptable in some cases. I also want to see if I can track down some sort of pattern - things that happen over and over again in different places. I'm going to need lots of books - history books and primary sources of all sorts.

Right now I can trace certain things back to a certain point in history but I need to know more to fill in the blanks and make sure there is enough there to support what I think - and that I'm just not totally making things up. I need an angle of approach and I think it will be women and power in societal roles as a start. It's something I've thought about a lot. And the converse, really. It's all interconnected. But one thing at a time, yes? (Besides, I'd need to find a guy who wanted to be crazy like me to tackle the other side of it. Just to be fair to it I should probably find one anyway.)

I know. I know. It's huge. It's something that I think will probably be something that occupies me .... forever, but that's okay. It will stop my brain from settling into atrophy without a fight.

Maybe I'll actually come up with something that makes sense at some point. I'm not expecting to find anything that makes sense. Maybe I'll start some sort of think tank eventually.

How do you get money for those sorts of things?

Okay. I'm babbling now.

I would also recommend the "Across Real Time" anthology by Vernor Vinge.

It's a commentary on progress (social, technological and biological) disguised as excellent science fiction. Reading this work made me realize that no major social (read "socio-political") changes have occurred in our global culture since the Bolshevik Revolution. Every new "idea" in the last century was mostly recycled.

Worse, I keep coming back to the sign of a dying culture: the end of personal politeness.

I, for one, think that the Roman Empire shall never die! Hail Cesar!

That is something else that I've been thinking. We haven't had a new socio-politcal idea since Communism. They don't come along all the time, mind you, but I think we're definately due for something.

My brain has pretty well atrophied, so I have nothing new to add. I will however watch this closely.

You can always call your research grad school and get money that way.

Or, once you get to a more solid footing, pitch it as a book and use your advance to fund the research. Although, good luck with that.

Yeah. I know, good luck with that.

Grad school is an idea but I'm not even sure where I'd go with that.

Think Tank Tracks

I know that a lot of think tanks operate like "charities" accepting donations and holding fund raisers and such. But I think usually think tanks are started up and funded by big corp's R&D budgets. Which of course there are very little in the US.

Good Luck
