Hmmmm...

I need a hobby.

I know I've said this before. I'm saying it again, though.

It can have a cost, but that cost can't be too high. I'm willing to put money out for it, whatever it is.

I want to be creative with it. I liked painting ceramics. That was great. I like painting but the set up costs kind of scare me away there. (That and I'm terrified of standing in front of an empty canvas with all of these paints and brushes and things that I just bought and not being able to come up with something.)

I would love to throw pots but studio time in the palces I can get to is really, really expensive.

Knitting doesn't take up enough of my brain power. I get bored with it and put it down and enver want to come back, really.

Any suggestions? I want to work the creative side of my brain.

Counted cross-stitch may involve your brain enough to be worth getting into. A complete pattern-plus-floss set is anywhere from $10 to $50, with probably 10 hours' work or more per $1 got out of it. A little more money will get you your own set of good tools (scroll frames, needles).

True. I used to do cross stitch. I even have the materials for something somewhere. My hoop broke and I never got it replaced. That is something I could probably get back into without too much effort. It just never seems to hold me to it.

That's how I am about most of my hobbies -- really neat for a little while, then I lose interest. I think that's why I've had so many. Hoops are pretty cheap, though, and frames only a little more expensive, and with a frame you can leave your aida on without stretching the fabric until you're ready to work on the piece again.

With a moderate initial investment you could also get into lead miniatures painting, which is something else I've been considering picking up again lately.

i've also got a ton of materials, and some patterns that might peak your interest. Somewhere. I have the sneaking suscpicion that there's a box of craft stuff of mine somewhere in the old house that I'm missing...

If you're looking for some patterns, I'm sure Leigh could help you out with that.

Or anything related to cross-stitch really.
