Yeah, I remember when Hans Blix was on the Daily Show. The UN Weapons Inspectors said (and still say) that there were no WMDs in Iraq ... and the powers that be didn't want to listen to them.

(1) Find a system with a lot of noise in it

(2) Find a pattern in the randomness

(3) Focus solely on that pattern, drawing all sorts of connections from it, insisting that that is the only evidence.

(4) Demand that people prove that your theory is completely and utterly impossible, not accepting any source of evidence other than your own.

It's easy to make up a theory. But to stand out in an already-crowded field would require a lot of work.
