This is stupid. Okay, I understand that roles should be re-evaluated since the world is changing, but... Really.

"Some employees are currently exempt because they hold advanced degrees or did postgraduate study. But most white-collar workers with any education beyond high school would be placed in a category of “learned professional” and would likely be exempt — unable to earn overtime."

"Workers would no longer be required to exercise decision-making and judgment in order to be considered a professional, or to mostly do “production” work in order to gain overtime rights. Instead, an employee considered to be in a “position of responsibility” could be made exempt."

"Even if employees who mostly perform routine, non-exempt tasks can still be made exempt. In one example the study cites, someone who stocks shelves could be considered an exempt employee if they also spend some time handling customer complaints."

It's the "Screw the Workers and Eliminate the 40-hour Work Week" bill.

I hope it passes, frankly. Because it's the biggest thing the Republicans could do to shoot themselves not so much in the foot, but through the chest.

I never support that kind of argument because voters sometimes forget those things and vote the person in again anyway and meanwhile people are getting screwed over.

I don't hope it pases that much, but I think right now it's close enough to the election that people wouldn't forget.

"Are you better off now than you were four years ago? How about before George Bush let your employer force you to work unpaid overtime?"

See you're also assuming candidates that would run on that kind of issue... I'm more jaded right now.

It's a great issue to run on. How could they not? It's the heart of "It's the Economy, Stupid." People vote with their pocketbooks.

Oh, holy fuck, that's retarded. But, you know, we've got to stimulate the economy by giving the companies more money to "put into payroll"! *snort*

Wait until Noam Chomsky, Jello Bifra and Michael Moore get a hold of this. The government has been taken over by big business. Both the Republican and Democratic parties have been hijacked by big business. Take a look at the Green Party and the Libertarian Party. This bill is just anothor way of allowing the government to help the big corperations to screw over the citizen. this kind of BS has to stop. Write your legislators and let them know that you are watching them.

After Molly Ivins wrote about it five weeks or so ago, I wrote Cantwell, Murray, and Adam Smith (my Congressman) informing them that I did *not* like this bill, and I would not vote for them if they voted for it. And all three of them (or at least their staffs) wrote back and said that it was a stupid bill and they weren't going to sign. So that's something.

If they were in the majority party, that might mean something.

Right now, the Republicans have enough if they hew to party lines and get Zell Miller, that treasonous fuck.

Zell Miller occassionally toes the Democratic line, which is appreciated. But good heavens! He's like, the last remaining Dixiecrat. I almost wish the Republicans in georgia would vote him out, just so we might get somebody decent the next time around.

What is it that makes the Midwest and the South so Republican? Really, what is it?

a) the Midwest is really more Democratic.

b) it's not about region, it's about populatin density, and the South is more rural.

So, the less dense the population, the more Republican it is?

It's not an absolute rule, but it's there. Remember the pro-Bush arguments after 2000? The huge swaths of land colored red for Bush? How Bush won counties on something like a 2:1 margin? Well, with the exception of Texas and Florida, Bush didn't win a single county with a population of over a million. As a general rule, if people live there, they voted for Gore.

On Sunday, I'm going to use the dataset here on Kris' computer to test my hypothesis.
