Hilarious, and sad. Unfortunately, I'm cynical enought to disagree with most of it.
This IS being ourselves. Suspending civil rights unconstitutionally for the greater good, provoking wars for economic interests, denying aid to the needy, even starting fights preemptively are all classic American traditions. This kind of evil is a large part of what made this country what it is today.
Yeah, I've been following that. The original article was annoying, but at least the community has given it a much-deserved reaming.
Calling these sociological fuckups temporary measures "for the duration" is not comforting, especially considering how many "temporary" measures we still have today dating back to wars fought long before I was born. Even if the "war on terror" was likely to end any sooner than the "war on drugs", the promise of restoring some of these civil rights after it's over would not be sufficient comfort me.
I understand and agree, but to be honest, we are more than that. I see that we're back stabbing bastards and evil people, but I also see all of the good we've done. I just want to get to a point where we're not being such obvious stupid bastards. Is that too much to ask?
No one is just evil and no one is just good and neither are countries.

Hopw's THAT for a cheerful thought?
