A bit of random whimsey...

So, I took up my sheaf of papers to the creature standing there. It was taller than I was, though that doesn't really do it justice. It was difficult to tell the exact dimensions of the thing, seeing as it sort of blurred at the edges, the essences of it bleeding out into the air. The robes it was wearing didn't help the effect, though those seemed to be standard issue around here. It must go with the job in this department. All I could say for certain was that it was taller and thinner than I. It reached out a skeletal hand for my papers, which I promptly handed over.
"Application for sound of ultimate suffering," it read in an amusingly high pitched voice. "Don't get many of these normally, but there has been a glut the past week."
"Look, I really, really need this. I'm going to be going through a lot in the next week or so, as you can see. I filled it out in quadrupilcate..." My voice drifted off as it raised one bony finger in my face. For a moemnt, I thought I could see through it.
It turned towards me, a sparkle, reflection maybe where there should be eyes, as if there were gems places there, as a pale imitation of the spark of life. "Look, I understand. Would next Tuesday do instead? Could you postpone your need for it? There was a guy in here I had to get a special dispensation for... He'll be getting the screams for the next five days to cover his suffering. You have no idea what strings I had to pull for that. You're only supposed to get one *ever* and he's getting all of them for five days."
I looked at him in disbelief, mouth hanging open just slightly.
"I'm so sorry. You'll have to move it to next week."
