The update!

Sooooo.

Holly and I went to go clean out Tracer X yesterday to find that the day I had been given by the insurance company didn't actually mean 'by the end of the day'. In fact, it might have meant by noon but I'm not entirely sure that's true either. He had been taken away to the lot where he will be assessed already. Calling Progressive, they told me he's going to a lot in Arlington which is open 9-5 (ha ha) and I can go up there and get all of my things or I can have them mail them all to me.

So, all of my stuff (and it had better be all of my stuff) will be mailed to me by the people who now have my darling car.

I'm agreived by this. I'll be calling Progressive about that again today.

The rental car I got is a Chevy Impala and it is so much more car than I need. The thing isn't quite a boat but it is a bit unwieldy and has crazy gadgets and fiddly things that are alien to my car needs. (It also has no real good way for me to check my blind spot over ym shoulder. HATE THAT.) After a few tries to get it into the garage, I pretty much just gave up. A good thing to remember for future car purchasing when I have the heart and the drive to do it.

I don't know. I don't have any plans yet, on what I want to get. I haven't even really started looking.

yeah the compact cars are usually cheaper to rent anyway, they probably gave you an impala because they thought you'd like a bigger one.

Yeah it sucks. When I was in the market, I just tried a couple and when I found one I liked (scion xb!) I just bought it. I hate the whole process and I figured I was gonna get screwed no matter what so might as well just get it over with.

Yeah. I have a general idea of what I want, what I'd like and what I'm willing to settle with. Ultimately, though, I just don't want a car payment if I can avoid it.

Well - step #1, start figuring out what your price range is.

Step #2 - figure out the manufacturer or style of car you want (ie. VW or "compact")

Step #3 - narrow it down from there with a lot of input and research and patience.

I don't need a big car. A compact car is more likely though I'd really like to get a mpg Jetta, those are usually the 4 cyclinder ones. Price range, well, I'd like not to end up with a car payment but if I do, not a large one. So, I'm a little flexible.

The closer to $0 the better. I could go as high as $200 but I would really prefer not to get to that if possible.

OK! That's a petty defined range, so it should be the primary point of informing your decision.

Mostly, you're pretty much just going to be looking @ cars under $20k - Minis, smaller toyotas / hondas, most Kias (but meh - I hates them), and a good chunk of smaller american cars.

Lots of good cars in that group.

Yeah. I've been seeing a lot of Jettas that I like and VW has a solid 'first time buyer' program that applies to their Certified vehicles too. So, thinking about that a lot. Gas mileage is an important factor too. I don't drive a ton but that's still really important to me.
