Back at work. Happy to be here, actually, even if my brain is a little mushy.

Now that all of the travel business is over, time to crack back down on myself for foods and what I'm eating and all of that fun. I need to start eating breakfast. I kind of hate it and my body rebels at the idea of food before 10am but it needs to happen. I need to go back toward more fresh veggies and less pasta/bread/rice. None of this sugar snacking, either, damn it. I've really slid there.

ECCC announced William FREAKING Shatner as a media guest on Saturday. I am so amazingly excited and at the same time, I feel a faint amount of dread. I have faith, though. Things will be okay. There will be better planning this year. I will institute changes myself, if nothing else.

What else, what else?

Ah, yes. I am lacking in faith that my laptop will actually die a true death before my warranty is up. I would like to get a new one so as I can play Civ 5 when it comes out without my laptop choking to death. (Or if anyone has an ideas of how to stop my current one from being so freaking stupid, I'd be up for those too. And yes, if you're up to it, I can describe 'freaking stupid' in more detail.)

And now, I will go find lunch. And attempt not to need a nap. Stupid time zones.

I find it hard to be excited about guests that require me to pay even more money just to meet them. There's just something about that whole business that seems.. unnatural. That said, I'm happy for the people who want to see him and are willing to shell out the $40-60 for the opportunity.

As far as your laptop goes, I have fixed many in my time so I'm happy to make suggestions if you want to share more detail of your woes.

Well, usually it doesn't cost to get in line and say hi. Autographs and photos do. *shrugs* I look at it this way, if it were free, there would be no end to the line for meet Shatner. If it were $5, you'd lose a few people but it would still be insane. At $10 a few more, $20 a few more... You have to find a certain point in which it isn't inaccessable but isn't out of reach either. The same with artist sketches, really.

When my laptop turns on, some times after it loads all the way up, after a brief glimpse of the desktop, the screen goes black.

I think the thing that really set me off on the whole idea was with Stan Lee last year. I was super excited to meet him, but then as far as I could tell it was gonna cost $$ just to be in line. I didn't need an autograph or photo, I just wanted to shake the man's hand. The idea that I had to pay to say "Good job. I love your work, etc" was insane.

As far as your computer goes, what model is it? What happens if you boot in to Safe Mode? Is the screen just going blank, but everything is still running? It sounds like a video card issue - maybe driver related, maybe something worse. Can you hook up an external monitor? Do you get video there after you boot?

Yeah. I can't speak to Stan as that was handled by his people. I know that the others, if you were willing to wait, were willing to shake hands and say hello. The BSG people have all been amazingly nice, as is Wil.

It is an HP Pavillion dv6000. I haven't been able to hook up an external monitor yet but, I'll try that. Safe Mode doesn't seem to change anything but the issue is intermittent, so it is challenging to determine when it is going to happen and when it won't. It does happen more often on waking up rather than starting up.

I did meet a few other people and yes, they were very nice. Julie Benz a couple years ago was great.

Ok, let me know how the external monitor goes. Also, what is the possibility of a reformat?

I could but, really, it would be a huge pain in the butt to reformat. And the external monitor thing works, except I can't get it to replicate the issue now.

So... I don't know.

I suppose it is possible that there is a bad or loose connection between your video card and mobo. That would be covered under warranty if the case.

Yeah. I sent it in an had it looked at but they said it wasn't hardware. *makes a face* Grrr.
