It seems Wonder Woman is getting a new look and a new origin.

I can't really comment on the origin as I haven't read the comic yet but I can say this is not at all the plot I thought it was when they announced another destruction of Paradise Island plot. So, that wins them points.

As for the costume... Well, I'm sure that, because this is the internet, I'm going to get flack for this. I generally like it. This is a costume that seems to fit what my perception of the DCU has become better than the American flag wrapped around her. I miss the bracers and what they meant. The jacket needs work.

This is better, though, than a corset top I have no idea how she stayed in during a fight.

Generally, I'm coming down on the positive side though that could change after I actually read the comic tomorrow.

I'm not surprised by this. Jim never liked her ridiculous thong look or the star-spangled hot pants (he always favored her gladiator skirt -- that's the version that made it into DCUO, at least up to this point), so it's no shock that he decided to go in a totally different direction with her look once he had the opportunity. I think I like it, and it sounds like it may change again as the changed timeline story is resolved.

I've never really liked the bathing suit look either. I liked the battle skirt. I liked the outfit with the ginormous cape... I liked anything that looked more functional, more battle ready.

The jacket is... too much an attempt to be "hip" and the "shoes" are just asinine (why not boots? wtf?).

The rest of it isn't bad, though. But it also looks very "2010" and not timeless. I'm not a big fan of her "bathing suit" look either, mind you, but something a bit more gladiatorial would have suited her better. Right now she looks like someone kind of crying for attention in a Seattle coffee shop. :p

Anyway, I expect this will last as long as her LAST costume revamp with a jacket did. Or the electric Superman suit. Or the Jean-Paul Batman armor. Et al.

Yeah. I don't like the jacket. The jacket is the part that will bother me the most but it looked better in the panels than the static pose.

Oh God, the bike shorts. *makes a face*

No, I liked the battle skirt with the axe... Mmmm.

See, I kind of like the jacket. I liked it when Brian Bolland was doing the covers back in the day and I liked it when Cassie was sporting that look as Wonder Girl.

Then again, my favorites superhero costume is Jack Knight as Starman, so I'm probably partial to that look anyway, lol.

Anything to get rid of the Star-Spangled Butt.

That said, I'm with [livejournal.com profile] jeffrey that the jacket is too overtly 'hip' and will probably be discarded in short order. Artists really enjoy drawing her bare arms, and damn right they are to do so. The top underneath is pretty much all win,. The belt and new bracers are just a little fussy and detailed to stay as they are now, so I expect there will be some streamlining there.

I have no idea what to think of the pants-shoes-what-is-that-even-called combination. Looks cool though, looks practical AND hot, and POCKETS (not even the guys have those) but...again, people really like drawing and looking at that Amazon musculature and those pants are going to seriously get in the way of DC's artist stable lavishing their customary attention on her mighty thighs.

I prefer pretty much any version of her getup that draws on the Greek soldier uniform. This is better than the classic version though.

And on a less-satisfied note that occurred to me upon further reflection, if they're serious about dressing her in a manner that befits a warrior WHEN THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING TO GET RID OF THE LONG RED NAILS

Try to punch somebody with a fist enclosing long nails. TRY.

Though, depending on the construction, they could be useful for reach through a rib cage to grasp a still beating heart.

True, true. That leads to a discussion of hero anatomy, however--is the dead tissue (nails and hair) still super? The fact that Superman never gets his eyebrows burnt off suggests that it's the case for him, but for everyone?

I like the owl on the belt. I hope they keep it but drawing it all the time would, in fact, be annoying as all get out. I agree, showing off her arms would be pretty sweet but I also like the fact that this seems to strike a balance between the symbol that is Superman and the practical that is Batman, if that makes sense.

It DOES make sense, and blending the symbol and the practical into something new can work amazingly well--look at Catwoman.

To be fair, though, I don't think this is anywhere near a Catwoman-tier redesign. It's modern and practical and I like it but it really does seem to lack resonance with the character. It's like...where's the Greek? Where's the royalty? Where's the strength and elegance?

I seem to be coming down harder on this outfit the more I talk about it. I admit, I AM gravely dissatisfied with it. But O Starry Ass is gone, and that can never be a bad thing.

I too thought of Catwoman's redesign in looking at this but, yeah. Her's went entirely practical and ultilitarian (and yet still sexy to varying levels) which is fitting giving that she's in Gotham. I do think that the royalty is missing but I think there is a reason for that due to the origin revamp. I don't know as she'll be royalty anymore.

At the same time, the Greek, the power, the ... yeah, strength and elegance are too missing here. The bracers were better as they were, I would like her to have full boots, which she might - it is a little hard to tell there. The bathing suit, though... God. Iconic but yet awful. Falling out and wedgies and *makes a face*

Not bad. I like the battle skirt outfit best, too, but that's not bad. Perhaps the jacket will regularly get blown to bits. :)

Yeah, see?

A lot of people are freaking out but you know what? I like it better than the bathing suit. Of course, really, not much could be worse than the bathing suit. Further down there is another panel that gives me a bit of hope about the jacket but... well, we'll see.

look it's the same jacket that every Marvel Comic character wore over their costume in the 90s...unless they wore a trench coat over their costume

It's more practical but less fun and representative of the amazon warrior origin, in my opinion. It's nice to see a female superhero not in a skimpy outfit too, but I do miss the gladiatorial skirt, and I really don't like the jacket. It's too "hip", "urban" and, as [livejournal.com profile] moonanstars said, very 90s, for her.

"She can close it up to pass unnoticed…open it for the freedom to fight…lose the jacket or keep it on..."

The headband, shiny bracelets, and boots though are something I don't see everyday, though. Then again, this is the DC universe.

Oh oh how about they put stars on the pants? ALL OVER THE PANTS! Or... one one each butt cheek like those pants with writing across the bum. That's trendy right? It's brilliant, no? No? Hello? Bueller? Bueller?

The jacket reminds me of her awful extreme early 90's outfit.

REALLY not a fan of chucking out everything Gail established to do an alternate universe riff.

Yeah, basically everything they've announced for JMS on Wonder Woman so far has me dropping the title in a couple of issues, but we'll see.

I feel the same about the way that Gail's recent work (mediocre as some of it may have been) is just kind of being written off. Some of it was very readable, and it added a lot to the character.

I don't mind the costume change particularly. Every character has alterations over time, and Wondy has had loads. I give it a year before we're back to the classical look though.
