This helps me so much, I can't even tell you. This totally helps explain why I'm conversant in and with Steampunk even though I muchly feel as through I'm on the outside looking in. (Though that also has to do with a complete lack of ability to costume worth a damn and, well, after awhile I feel bad about continuing to ask people to make things for me.)

That WHOLE article is full of things I love. (Before Lilo & Stitch and Mulan, The Great Mouse Detective was my favorite Disney movie.)

Also, if your subculture is going to live and thrive, you need exposure or you never get new blood. Inclusion, explaination and exposure ARE GOOD THINGS, people. Oi. Change doesn't ahve to be bad. New people can add awesome. And if you don't like the new, nothing says /you/ have to change.

MEH.

Meh.

Did you fetch up against some "IT'S NOT BROWN/VICTORIAN/HAND-WIRED TO SMOKE AND SPIN ENOUGH TO BE STEAMPUNK" people?

(...and was it me?)

*laughs*

No. I just am frustrated by that entire reaction, though I can be just as guilty of it myself. "OMG, PEOPLE LIKE US! RUN AWAY! SHUNNNNN THEM!" It makes no sense.

Because the way things were when you were introduced to a thing is Right, and later developments are Wrong. (see: Pluto) Also the idea that coolness is a zero-sum equation. Which, to a limited degree, it is.

I know, I know, it's still bullshit. :D And I'm personally very very guilty of the "You have drifted too far afield, that's not even __________ anymore and you should stop trying to cram your bizarre crap into its framework" followed by "OMG I'M GUNNA MAKE ME A ROCKET HAT".

(bonus hypocrite points if I can work "you're just a trend-surfing dilettante" sniffery into the pre-rocket hat statement.)

You got to love everybody, and make them feel good about themselves.

Well, there /are/ edges to a thing. There is a style and a theme and you can, in fact, leave it if you go too far afield. Baroque is not Classical is not Romantic, you know? To me, though, that is entirely different than someone who is making a beginning effort or trying something a bit different or ... yeah. Such efforts should help define an area and not be discounted because of that.

Totally. You got to love everybody tonite.
