I'm not sure why this makes me so sad but I do know that I was really pulling for him.

I think part of the reason it is so sad is because he was so gracious and optimistic about his illness. He didn't throw a pity party, didn't use it to seek attention, didn't use it as a publicity stunt - he just made it clear that his life was dedicated to fighting this battle and winning it. It's sad to see someone with such strong conviction and such a real, down-to-earth way of handling it lose that battle.

That's part of it. Very well said.

I think another part of it is that he didn't stop living at all. He went to work - he kept moving forward.

That's it exactly--you summed it up beautifully. Do you mind if I quote you when I post about it in my own journal?

I think he was a part of our childhood. He was the guy that proved you could be masculine and a dancer at the same time. He'll be missed, but his legacy as an actor/dancer/songwriter will continue.

I was completely obsessed with Dirty Dancing when I was younger. I was never entirely sure why.

It was a movie that when we were younger we all kinda connected with, sneaking around behind our parent's backs and not getting caught.

For a guy, it was a movie about being that bad boy but deep inside being a brave and caring man.

For a girl, it was a movie about being independent of your parent's expectations and becoming a woman.

Good thoughts there. *nods* There was a lot of doing the right thing no matter what others might think.

Wow, he made it two years with pancreatic cancer? I know it's not the indefinite survival you were hoping for, but it's actually incredibly good. I hope he enjoyed it!

He fought and he fought really hard. He was always doing something, living life, enjoying the time he had with his wife. If I'm ever in a situation like that, I hope I can handle it with as much grace.
