David Eddings died yesterday. http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/authors/fantasy_author_david_eddings_has_died_118050.asp?c=rss

His books were some of the first fantasy I read voraciously. While there were certainly flaws with his books, there were also fantasic characters and rollicking high adventure. I enjoyed being able to talk about them with my father, which brought us to a point where we could read Robert Jordan together. This brings home that I'm very much reaching the age where my childhood heroes are starting to die, which is an odd, odd mental place.

I'll update on other entertainment things later.

Wow. I just recently reread the Belgariad, but might have to reread Mallorean now. That whole setting is one of my favourite fantasy settings.

Really sad to hear. :(

Odd that you mention it--David Eddings' Belgariad was the first series my mom and I both read when I was about 13, which brought us both to Jordan. It was because of his books that we finally had something in common, and to this day we trade fantasy/sci-fi books back and forth.

As you say, they weren't perfect, but they were good, and I'm sad he's gone.

It seems a lot of people I know came to those books at about the same age, which is totally cool. I think I should read them again.
