New York, NY: Monday, March 30, 2009

Tor Books is proud to announce the November 3rd, 2009 on-sale date for The Gathering Storm, Book Twelve of The Wheel of Time and the first of three volumes that will make up A Memory of Light, the stunning conclusion to Robert Jordan’s beloved and bestselling fantasy series. A Memory of Light, partially written by Jordan and completed by Brandon Sanderson, will be released over a two-year period.

Robert Jordan, one of the greatest storytellers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, passed away in 2007 after a courageous battle with the rare blood disease amyloidosis. Brandon Sanderson, the New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn books, was chosen by Jordan’s editor—his wife, Harriet McDougal—to complete the final book.

And before you say anything bad about the book being split into three books, I would like to point you here: http://www.brandonsanderson.com/article/56/Splitting-AMOL. This is the man who has been tasked with trying to piece the ending of this thing together and what he has to say about it. I'm happy to be getting a chance to read the ending of this in whatever form it comes in and, y'know, if he can manage to wrap up even most of it, I'll be thrilled. I am not envious of the task given to Brandon Sanderson and I'm sort of awed by the undertaking.

One 250K book a year for the next three is fine by me.

I was kind of wondering how they were going to deal with the unbelieveable hugeness of that book. Splitting it works ok for me. :)

Considering the size, I think splitting it is also the best solution.

Also, I like Sanderson's article there. It's long, but it gives a great explination (especially for those of us who don't know the nuts-and-bolts of publishing. It doesn't assume we're dumb). :)

It is really well written and sums things up rather well for me.

I am not mad that it will be three more books. Honestly, it is RJ's legacy and he deserves to tell the rest of his story, and his fans deserve to hear it.

I am also cackling evilly, because it is JUST like RJ that he gets to torture fans, even beyond the grave. Well played, you wordy old dog!

For a bunch of us, it's like 'Wait, we deal with George R R Martin. 2 years? That's like no time at all."

Splitting it is fine...but over 2 years?

He's still writing it. I can't imagine writing and editing 800K words.
