Universal Pictures has picked up the film rights to Robert Jordan’s bestselling fantasy series The Wheel of Time. Okay. Sure. I.... Hrm.

Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain have been hired to write the new Conan movie. They've written Outlander (which has yet to be seen but has aliens and Vikings, so I sort of want to see it) and one of the Underworld movies. Ngh.

ABC is bringing the Jennifer Lopez movie Maid in Manhattan to the small screen. The lead in the TV version will still be a young Latina from the Bronx working at a Manhattan hotel who tries to make it in the world. In this case, though, the series will focus mostly on her relationships with co-workers instead of hooking up with a rich guy.

And. WTF. WHY IS SOMEONE REMAKING ROCKY HORROR? Why? This doesn't need to happen. IT DOES NOT. I think that this really shows that a) remakes have really just gone WAY too far and b) someone HAS MISSED THE POINT of what should be remade. The idea, at least to me, of a remake is to either a) improve upon it or b) update it with a new message if the old message no longer applies. (I feel the same about covering songs on albums, for the most part. Why do it if it sounds the same as the original?) I think both can have some value but in the long run the second one usually benefits more from an entirely new movie, unless you're doing something fantastic with the material. In the case of Rocky Horror, the reason it continues to be a phenomenon is in part to the fact that it is cheesy and generally not that great of a film. Rocky Horror is no longer all about the movie at all (if it ever was) - it is about the audience participation and the sense of a communal experience. I'll always hold the memory of my first Rocky show dear. It was an odd time in my life and the whole experience fit right in. Strangely enough, we made that the second movie in a double feature. The first one was a Star Trek movie Anyway, it doesn't need to happen and shouldn't. Especially not by MTV who get further and further away from the sort of group I trust to understand the concept every day.

Film rights doesn't always equal movie. It just means, rights.

However, I think that RJ would translate into a movie format just fine - that way you don't have to waste pages describing the embroidery on Nynaeve's petticoat. If a picture's worth 1000 words, then a movie should be able to wrangle that story. :)

It is possible that it could be good. I loved the first three, at the very least. I think that there are things that could be good and things that could be bad. We'll see. I'm still a little leery of fantasy movies. Especially in a series that currently has no ending.

I'll believe someone's going to make a movie out of the Wheel of Time just as soon as HBO gets to making that long-promised series based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. In other words: never.

Prove me wrong, HBO! (Please!)

Ok they are going to film a series of books doomed to never be finished because the author is dead? I'm sorry...the man was a good writer admittedly, but he really did live up to something I said when I was waiting for book 4 or 5 to come out. "He'll die before the series is finished!" I seriously gave up on the books because he was so damned slow! Talk about losing your audience!

ANYWAY....no. There WILL be no RHPS remake because I refuse to believe anyone is stupid enough to even CONSIDER that!

They actually have the last book. He finished it. I'm just not at all certain if it will ever be published. Last I heard, it was stuck in editing hell.

MTV is that stupid.
