So. Day Three.

The Hives - A good time. Always a good time. The frontman is hilarious and they put out as much energy as they can. I love watching them when I can. Especially when he's saying things like, "This is a lovely gorge you have here. We're going to have to hold ourselves to 65%. If we were to rock at 85%, 90%, we'd destroy it." Or something like that. I'm misremembering, I know.

Built to Spill - If it says anything about the set, I read a book and napped through pretty much the whole thing. All of the songs sort of blended into each other and into forgettability. The crowd didn't seem to care much either, because....

Rodrigo y Gabriella - These guys got more emotion out of the crowd in the first five minutes that Built to Spill did their entire set. Oh my God, I am in love. I haven't had such a strong response to music in a long, long time. They had some problems with their set due to technical difficulties when switching Gabriella's guitar. So, Rodrigo vamped for a bit, playing some Metallica and a few others. Amazingly impressive. The best moment of the weekend, though, for me was when he played a few notes of "Wish You Were Here" in between other songs and the crowd started signing along. They both seemed surprised at it but both kept playing an amazingly beautiful version of it and most of the crowd sang the words. It was a hell of a moment. I almost cried.

Flight of the Conchords - I don't think this works for me in that sort of atmosphere. They're funny but I don't think I was in the mood for it or something. Sean and I packed up and left after two or three songs.

It was a good thing we did, too. The traffic was UGLY on the way back. I can't imagine what it would have been like later in the evening. We managed to get through it with enough time to meet Holly and Steve for a 10:05 showing of Speed Racer.

I understand why a lot of people didn't like this movie. In fact, if you aren't totally hooked into this movie by the end of the first or second flashback, I'd really recommend giving up because this movie is completely not for you. I LOVED IT. Wow. It is a ride of color and light and movement and pretty much joy. If you come into this movie feeling jaded or unable to suspend your disbelief, it isn't going to work. Everyone in this was good, even Matthew Fox, who I'm starting to get a little tired of. (I love Lost but really, I'm done with Kate and Jack. They're the least interesting people on that show.) I think there are things I saw in this movie, techniques and colors and imagery that I'll be seeing in other places for a long time. You don't need drugs to see this movie. This movie is the drugs and the trip all in one.

And well, "I can't see a thing in this helmet," was nicely done.

Oh, man! I haven't seen Rodrigo y Gabriella myself, but last year I saw a young woman, a fiddler, who played with them, and she told stories about them and I would *love* to see them play. Envy! Lucky you! Cool! I'm glad they were brilliant!

They were amazing. Simply amazing.

I was suprised at how little they talked in general but it was cool.

Welcome.

to the Rodrigo y Gabriela society. It's a brave new world.

They've done the Pink Floyd thing the few times I've seen them, it is a really great moment. Did they do the guitar neck camera? I love that angle. Did they say anything about their new album? They should be done recording by now...

I'm gonna listen now. Thanks for getting me in the mood.

They didn't say anything about much of anything, really. Not much talking. He did use his beer bottle as a slide, though. That was awesome.
