$750 to fly into Hancock - Seattle to Portland to Minneapolis to Hancock.
$570 to fly to Marquette - Seattle to Chicago to Marquette.
$370 for Chicago
$330 for Minneapolis.

Really starting to look like flying in and driving 6 hours again because I'll likely be renting a car, any which way I go.

Anyone want to come with me?

Upper Michigan in August!

C'mon! It'll be lots of fun.

Three low cost airlines went under in the last week (sadly, including Skybus). Combine that with a 67% increase in the price of jetfuel and we're all about to pay a lot more money for airfare.

$750 is harsh. Color me surprised.

Yeah. $750 is freaking absurd. I'm not paying that.

It's a pity trains and busses don't work so well. A friend of mine booked a train trip to Seattle last year. It cosst her $500 and took THREE DAYS to get there and another 3 to get back. She said it was worth it for the travel experience. I don't know about you, but I don't normally have six days to spend at my destinatinon, much less in transit.

Maybe public transit will improve as fuel costs go up and Homeland Security gets nuttier. One can only hope.

Yeah. I've looked at trains before. Really not usually the way to go on the West Cost at all.

No kidding. Admittedly, it is the middle of no where. I mean, really no where but... Bleh.

And my family reunions are good fun.

Sometimes, nowhere is a good place to be.

And those ticket prices are ASS.

I've never had a large family to really 'get' that idea or be able to enjoy them. I think family reunions are a very American thing...

Well, when you have so much more space to spread out over... It isn't easy to get together for dinner whenever you want.

Yes! It's really not unusual to be 3,000 miles apart from parents and things here. And I think there's more of an emphasis on families staying in touch, though that could just be my own experience. They seem so small and self-contained where I'm from.

Where did you find $750?

Picking an arbitrary week of Aug 17-24:
Farecast says "no flights found"
Priceline gives $532 for Seattle-Boise-Minneapolis-via NWA/Alaska
Expedia offers the same package at $601
Travelocity claims that they have two seats left for Seattle-Minneapolis-Hancock at $613 via NWA
Hotwire says that you can't get there from here.
Using the "3 days either way" search gets down to $485 on nwa.com

Expedia gave it to me for the first weekend in August after taxes and fees and all of that.

7/31/2008 - 8/5/2008

Flight from $691.99 + $46.01 taxes & fees = $738.00
2 tickets left at this price!

Air Canada isn't offering much better for flights to Sault Ste Marie.
As an added bonus, they managed to get my browser to crash.

The Soo is arguably further away anyway.

Google says 5 hours but... well... Roads in the UP are not all that great. Minneapolis ends up being close to the same length drive, all said and done. Marquette would be better than either - it's only 2 hours or so.

What about for Detroit?

What about for Seattle-Narita-Detroit? As long as you're going to pay a buttload you might as well, you know, go crazy?

Duluth? Your family's on the Wisconsin end of the UP, right?

Yeah. The Wisconsin end. Duluth is just as bad as Hancock in most cases.
