Greetings Programs...
Feb. 27th, 2008 11:22 amI am ill.
I'm not entirely certain how sick I am as it seems to come and go, really. This morning I was feeling like warmed over death on toast. Right now, I'm okay - sinus headachey and generally achey and grumpy. Earlier I had the chills which made me think I might have a fever but I don't - if this cheap thermometer is to be believed at least.
I'm spacey and cold. I do not like this.
Not at all.
I would prefer to be able to do more of the thinking. I like the thinking. I dislike having to rewrite things four or five times in order to be able to be clear.
Bleh.

Date: 2008-02-27 08:32 pm (UTC)Beriberi is caused by a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1). It is common in people whose diet consists mainly of polished white rice, which is very low in thiamine because the thiamine-bearing husk has been removed. It is also seen in chronic alcoholics with an inadequate diet, as well as being a rare side effect of gastric bypass surgery. If a baby is mainly fed on the milk of a mother who suffers from thiamine deficiency then that child may develop beriberi.
The disease has been seen traditionally in people in Asian countries (especially in the 19th century and before), due to those countries' reliance on white rice as a staple food. Beri-beri is a nutritional disorder caused by deficiency of vitamin B charactarized by damage to nerves and heart; general symptoms include loss of appetite and feeling of lassitude.
