We lost. This does not bother me for a few reasons. I'm a loyal fan. I was with the Red Wings when they were called, very unaffectionately, the Dead Things. When they couldn't make th playoffs (and only five teams didn't make it). That and typically they lose the first game of a series. It's nice when they don't but it isn't a soul crushingly bad thing either. That and from what I could tell both teams were not playing the hockey I know they can. It really felt like a warm up game. Tonight, I wish to see the Kings beat the Avs. That would be nice.

So, I'm still packing. The thing is, the more I pack, the more my apartment looks like a disaster zone. I don't understand it at all. I put all the clothes I don't want in a bag. So I have books, videos and clothes all ready to go somewhere and be donated or something. The plan for this evening is to finish my books, pack all of my CDs and movies and start on the dishes and glasses I'm not using.

I hate packing.

The thing I hate about packing is there always seems to be more stuff. I pack and look, there is more stuff. I mean, where does it come from?

Woooo. That would be sweet. How does Wednesday sound? Monday is a dinner with highschool chums and Tuesday is always something or other.

*hugs*

I think I could work that out, no problem.

The one thing that makes me nervous about the Wings is that they really played poorly down the final stretch (once they clinched the President's Trophy). Obviously part of that was because there was no need to play hard and risk injury & being tired for the playoffs, but that kind of streak going into the playoffs leaves you with a total lack of momentum. If the Canucks capitalize on it and win the next game, Detroit is in hot water.

The Kings are going to have some trouble beating the Avs - I'd say it'll be determined by Forsberg. If Forsberg is even playing at 85%, the Kings won't be able to win - with a healthy Forsberg the Avalanche can play three strong scoring lines. The Kings simply can't match that depth. Without Forsberg, the Kings can concentrate on beating up on Joe Sakic and that turns the series into an entirely different contest.

I agree with you. The Wings haven't won in April yet. That is something I worry about. I know that the Wings have the ability to kick it up into a new level that they didn't do last night. There were a lot of odd caroms last night, a lot of pucks that just bounced strangely for both teams and neither team was playing at its best.

I'm waiting to see how Forsberg really is. No matter what, he won't be 100%. With out Hejduk, all they'd really need to do is cause Roy to lose his cool, which I've seen them do. Potvin is a competant goalie and he should be okay.

Without Forsberg, the Avs/Kings series is a tossup, but I still have to give the edge to the Avs. They have the best defense in the league right now, and Roy really is the best goaltender in the NHL. If Forsberg isn't playing well, the series will turn into a slow grind that will probably end with the Avs in 7, probably with a few OT games as well. That'd be bad, as no one wants to play a hard first round series - tires you out for the rest of the playoffs.

If Forsberg is back and at 85%, the Kings just don't have the defensive depth to cover both Forsberg and Sakic. That opens both men up for scoring opportunities. Potvin is good, but he's not a top tier goaltender (he's not on the level of Roy, Hasek, Belfour, and Brodeur).

While knowing very little about the Red Wings in particular, there is the school of thought that a team can really only "peak" once per season, and if you peak too soon - in the regular season for the NHL, in tune-up friendlies for int'l soccer - you've screwed yourself out of your best form for the games that really matter.
And "peak" means more than just physical ability; it's the psychological urgency that pushes athletes to do better and really win games. That's a draining factor, and it can't be repeated at will.
So perhaps the Wings were coasting through April, resting up physcially and mentally for the much tougher task ahead.
Kat, do you have an octopus ready?

I do not have an octopus ready. I really should get a stuffed octopus or a big plastic one one of these days. Keeping a fresh one around so I could throw it on the ground during games would just be silly. If I were at a game, I would think about sneaking one in.

Yeah. Well, they were resting most of their players through out this month, which is something. One game is not that big of a deal. Two... Two would be near deadly.

Yes, a fresh octopus would be silly.

A frozen one would be much better.

That and I'd just be throwing it around where ever I would be watching it. That would be icky and messy. I think stuffed animal would be a much better idea. Maybe I can get one of the big angry plastic ones with a jersey on it.
