Feb. 9th, 2008 04:30 pmSo, Kris and I went to the caucus.
This started with us going to go get coffee (Kris cocoa because she's given up coffee for Lent) and then walk over to the Library. Once we get to the Library, we find our caucus has moved to an entirely different place. In fact, it is far enough away that I'm not entirely certain where it is. The address says 19th but I have no idea where this Prospect is. (My street name knowledge starts at Jackson and ends at Aloha. Prospect is the next one after Aloha.)
So, it is like a 20-30 minute walk to there from where we are, so we jump in the car and drive on up. There are A LOT of people out walking to their polling places. Everyone is going to different places. We end up getting the the church we were supposed to be in but we're not sure what line we're supposed to be in because there are three districts caucusing here. (Later we found out it was actually four.)
So, we get in line. We're not entirely sure that we can participate here because we've both recently moved into the area. A nice lady went to try to find us registration ballots because we need to change our addresses. And we stand in line. And the line gets confused because everyone needs to look at the maps on the doors in order to figure out what district you're in. Kris and I figured out that we were in 1851. (A number I will continue to get wrong again and again all day.) So, we wait in line and wait in line and we talk to people.
We talked and talked and talked. There didn't seem to be many Hilary people but the ones who were there were very vocal and very passionate. Once everyone was counted up there were 140 of us present. 104 for Obama, 8 undecided and the rest of them for Hilary. It was an awesome thing. We gathered up 4 of the undecideds and Hilary got 2 and the other 2 just left, apparently. It ended up being 7 Obama delgates and 2 Hillary delegates.
It was completely loud and confusing and involved a lot of yelling. I was one of the vocal people. And then we asked for people to be delegate and I ended up playing Rock, Paper Scissors to be a delegate. I lost. But because I was a woman and we didn't have any female delegates, they picked me.
I am officially a delegate for Barack Obama at the 43rd Congresional District. Go me! I will end up going to stand up for Barack where ever that ends up being. I'll totally go to where ever that is. And if I get picked to the state level, I'll totally got to Spokane. And I'll go to Denver too, if I end up going to the national level.
I'm excited to be a part of things. This is actually really cool.
Heee! Yeah!

Date: 2008-02-10 03:46 am (UTC)I noticed that too...
Date: 2008-02-10 04:22 am (UTC)About 100 people from my district showed, only 2 undecided. Those who were decided were extremely firm, and the numbers were as such that the 2 wouldn't have affected the delegate spread, so no debate ensued. We got 6 delegates total, 2 ended up being for Hilary and 4 for Obama.
The most fun of it ended up being how many people from my building showed, most of whom I didn't know. About 20 folks live here, and 9 of us were at the caucus, 5 of whom I'd never met before. Good times.

Date: 2008-02-10 07:24 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong. If she gets the nomination, I'm TOTALLY voting for her and supporting her.
I'm just not sold that she can defeat McCain. And I really like Obama's platform a whole heck of a lot more.

Date: 2008-02-10 06:39 am (UTC)We only had about 20 people show for our little district, but there must have been about 20 districts total and the school gym was packed. So much so people had a hard time fitting inside the building.

RE: So, Kris and I went to the caucus.
Date: 2008-02-11 05:28 am (UTC)I suppose that you now have learned that your district and precinct are printed on your voter's registration card. It will say 43-1851 somewhere on your card. Mine is 43-1375. Both
I see a lot of similarities between now and 2004. But unlike 2004 the progressive candidate is winning out. Kerry was a conventional corporatist. Howard Dean was a progressive candidate. If it turns out to be Clinton vrs McCain it will be 2004 all over again.
