Kare = him
Kore = this

Kore - this, sore - that, are - that over there, dore - which

And, totally unrelated, for those of you wondering about the All Along the Watchtower from last night? Go check this out. Thank to Sean for that.

And in Attic Greek, 'kore' means 'maiden' and was Persephone's name before she got hitched.

Which would explain why your talk at outback was confusing me, that is, kare kano (actually abreviations for kareshi kanojo, but stuck in my head as his hers, which is correct for the first one, but kano doesn't mean hers, the full words are actually boyfriend and girlfriend)

kareshi and kanojo can also be used to refer to someone in the 3rd person (i.e., him or her). At least I'm pretty sure I've seen and heard it in that context.

Also, to [livejournal.com profile] lithera, one of my Japanese teachers called kore/sore/are/dore type words the "KSAD" set of words. If there is a spatial relationship, usually k is close to the speaker, s is far from the speaker but close to the person being talked to, a is for something far from both, d is for the unknown/questions.

-re is a non-specified objects
-no (kono, etc) is for specified objects (they must be followed by a noun)
-ko (koko, etc) is for places
-chira (kochira, etc) is for directions
-iu (koiu, etc) is for "manner" (this manner, that manner, which manner)

I can't think of any more off hand...

Yeah. I have the K/S/A/D down (especially with doko) it is always the ending part that trips me up.

The rest of that is very helpful. Thanks!

No prob! Oh, and I just realized that with the -ko words, it's

koko
soko
asoko
doko

The a- word doesn't follow the pattern exactly for that set.

Heh. Doko is the one I know well, which is probably why I'm messed up for the others. *grins*

Heh.

Oh, I thought of 2 more sets, sort of.

-itsu, which functions pretty much as -re but can also be used to refer to people, and can have negative connotations (perhaps the speaker is being curt)

-u (kou, sou, ***, dou; I don't remember how to form the a- one), which is also way/manner (dou being "how")
