The room party... Woooo.

So. I have no DJ. This is a disappointment but in a way makes things a bit more simple. I don't think that I'll be able to find anyone else and it gives me one less thing to flip out about if things go badly for what ever reason, right? Sure.

I have alcohol but the real question is how much should I have? I know I'm going to need to buy more than I have right now (along with mixers and such but that can be closer to the day of...) but... I really have no idea how much it should be. Any guesses?

Ummmmm. If anyone has any folding card talbe like deals that I can borrow, that would be awesome. If not, I can cope. I'm thinking minimalist is probably how things will go but I will need something for a bar. (Though I've seen plenty of parties pour drinks in the bathroom - if only to keep people from making a huge mess in there.)

So.. ideas and stuff welcome.

There will be a birthday bowling post later today, I think. (Remember... 24th!)

i have 2 plastic folding card tables. I could probably get you a DJ but you might be better off just letting a laptop play a playlist off of itunes. Tim & I did that for a wedding, we had some nice speakers and it worked well. What did you decide about the floor? What day is it anyway? I think it's on my birthday.

It will be April 7th.

I'm not even sure I'll worry about music. With the smaller room parties no one ever dances anyway. If my desktop is up and running at that point, I'll bring it and do some streaming background tunes or something.

Yeah, that's my birthday all right. I'm going out to dinner that night, but maybe I can stop by and pretend it's MY birthday party. Can I get in without a Norwescon Ticket? I'm not so sure I am ready to do the con thing but parties are fun...

I suggest many many jello shots. I have had much experience with making them and they are yummy and easy to transport.

It is possible. It depends on what the general rules are and how much security they have this year. I've seen years where parties were open to everyone and I've seen years where they monitor for badges.

*shrugs*

The good news is that I do, in fact, have an awesome camping table, about 3'x8'. The bad news is that it is in the possession of my former in-laws, so the likelihood of me ever getting it back is pretty close to zero.

I do also have an outstanding set of powered computer speakers with subwoofer I could loan you, if you go the DJ Compy route.

Honestly, I don't think you can have too much alcohol. If the ravenous hordes don't polish it off and you don't want to bring it home, you have Saturday AND Sunday and a con full of people to distribute leftovers to.

Well, the party will be on Saturday but you have a point there. I just want to make sure I have enough, rather than really being worried about having too much.

How many people will be attending, do you know?

It is a con room party... So... whoever walks in the door.

That definitely makes it a bit harder to judge how much will be needed.

My recommendation is lots of mixers. People at con leave their wits at the door, and will pour themselves into alcohol stupor before you can say, "That wasn't vodka." Have a good selection of the basics, vodka, tequila, (I would seriously recommend no whiskey in the room, it kills the guest of honor dead) and some of the not-so-basics, creme de cacao and buttershots (for flavored fun.)

If you buy stuff by the case, you will get a better deal.

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend the party, but I have a feeling that Luke will be able to, so at least you can enjoy his company.

Ahhhh! Two different parties, my dear.

Jenn is hosting the Brian party. I am hosting an ordinary room party. They will be the same room - different times.

Yes but god forbid someone feed Brian whiskey when he's so drunk he isn't in the mind to say no. I'm sure he's coming to your party too!

Good to know.

Generally just planning on vodka, tequila and rum for my party. Because I don't want to be complicated with the drinks. Probably some Bailey's in there too.

Excellent call.

I hope it turns out well for you!

I wish I had a decent PA system, or even a good set of portable speakers, else I would be more than happy to bring my laptop and provide a soundtrack for the evening. Good luck. :)

Afternoon - like 1 or 2. We have to finalize arrangements with the alley.

With the smaller room parties no one ever dances anyway.

Not true, at least in my experience. Some prefer to dance in small room parties because they don't feel exposed like they would on a dance floor. If the music's loud, the drinks are good, and the room is dark and square (i.e., no beds taking up valuable floor space), someone will dance.

NOTE: I have DJ'ed two parties of this nature with resounding success. You might have a playlist already in mind, but if not I can provide one in addition to pouring drinks. I have the plague that will make your booty move.

Well, in my experience with smaller parties, it is normally just me dancing, so... I'm willing to be wrong!

The bed will have been moved out, so... You're on, man.

You have any recommendations to amounts of alcohol? I'm planning on keeping it simple on what alcohol I have around.

My recommendation: serve one thing and a lot of it. Two Gatorade coolers' worth should be sufficient unless you tear the roof off the sucker.

Rum and fruit punch is the easy sleazy. Screwdrivers always please but if that's all you serve expect some yakkers. If you make anything with whiskey in it, go easy on the proportions. You can always get creative and get a rep with an original drink creation, but don't do it unless you know it's a crowdpleaser. Don't serve wine, and don't serve beer unless you get a keg.

All this assumes that you want a lively OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ type of party and not people sitting around chatting. If you're wanting a more low-key, smoove type of party (those are always cool too) then you'll want to diversify your liquor and probably have a bartender who's more skilled than I am. :)

Nope. That sounds a lot like what I was thinking already.

Awesome.
