Today is my little sister's birthday.

She's turning 21.

She's going out drinking with my dad.

I feel somewhat envious of the expreience. I feel strangely old, though I know I'm not.

It's just all around a strange thing.

I think I'll have a drink for her this evening.

Drinking with Dad? Somehow that seems increadably wrong. Isn't there some sort of tradition that when you turn 21 your friends take you out and get you smashed. No first hand experience on this--didn't have friends at that age. And I didn't get drunk for the first time until I met Jenn.

*laughs* My dad is actually amazingly cool for things like that. I'm envious of her chance to have an experience like that. The main problem with ahving her friends take her out to get blizted is they're all a few hundred miles away.

When I turned 21 - a Friday night, as I recall - I worked a fifteen hour day. A week or two later a friend of mine asked me whether I'd just had a birthday recently or something.

The post-script is even worse. The next year I worked a sixteen-hour day - on a Saturday - and my friends still didn't even notice it was my birthday. The next year was a leap year, so it's been weeknights ever since, so even if someone had thought of it I still couldn't really get taken out drinking. Sigh.

It sucked a lot. It's better now, though - I have two Irish pubs within five minutes' stumble, and friends who live just as far away who could drag me there with very little prompting. =]
