What I'm reading - Spartan Women by Sarah B. Pomeroy - Making me want to read a hell of a lot more Xenophon. I had something of a crush on him before but he's one of her biggest sources, along with plutarch and Cicero. (Yes, I know it is strange to have a crush on someone two millenia dead. Hush.) There is a lot of interesting material here.

What I'm listening to - Not a lot. Does anyone have any recommendations for new CDs I should pick up? I haven't bought a CD in ages. Any bands I should try? My tastes are eclectic. That said, I've been listening to a lot of Queen and The Beatles recently.

What I'm doing this weekend - Going to Vancouver. HA HA HA! *ahem* I'm going up on Friday and coming back down on Monday. Spending some time with [profile] angrylemur. All of you are totally jealous, I know.

What I'm looking forward to - Said trip to Vancouver. The Prestige. Playing D&D again on the 9th. Seeing my sister's wedding photos.

What's bugging me - Do you have friends that you feel you start all of the conversations with? That you always have to track down? That you generally feel make less effort to keep up with you and all of that than you do of them? (I know I'm probably this person to some people. Ugh.) I want someone to visit me. Not that I don't like travelling to see people and all but someone should visit me for once. (Okay, okay. I'll stop pouting.)

Ummmmmm. I think that's it. Time to take my meds. Wheeeee.

Just a comment on your last paragraph about being bugged.

I can relate in perhaps a different way.

I have a friend who lives about 4 hours away. Whenever they come to Seattle they won't just come to my house to visit me, I have to meet them somewhere they'll be meeting a bunch of other people.

Then this person is constantly asking me when I'm comgin to their city to visit them (which I have done a few times in the past.) WHY should I do that when you don't even do that to me?!!

*nods* I don't want to come off as being unreasonable or anything. I'd be a bit annoyed in your situation, especially. I know they want to maximize their time and see everyone but man...

I am very high on The New Pornographers (smart power pop) and Sufjan Stevens (a smidgen folky but generally straight-ahead quiet emo-rock without the overwroughtness due to the fact that he's singing about states) right now. I would recommend them to anyone.

YOu know, you made me realize its been about a year since I last bought music. Suddenly there is a deepset urge clawing at the back of my mind.... must ... find stereo...

I know that I for one have always been a visitor rather than a visitee. Generally anyone who is willing to hang out with me is happy to see me when I'm around. But the rough edges mean that I'm not the one they seek out whenit occurs to them to find somone to hang with.

I used to get really bent out of shape about this, but inthe last several yers I've gotton over myself, in alot of ways. I'm currently working on the whole instigate the socialization thing. It's amazing the things that I lack the subtlty for. Freaking inviting someone over without being blunt can confuse me.

I currently have Roisin Murphy on high rotation both on my iTunes as well as in the car; if I manage to escape the dr's in time tonight, I'll drive and you can listen to it.

Damn. I need a good classics icon. Hell, I need to cough up the dough and make this a paid account already. When I am home from the Amish Paradise, I shall have to share the titles of some good books on women in the ancient world, if that's up your alley. Spartan Women is a pretty good one, but keep in mind that most of what we know is reading between the lines based on what disapproving nearby city states had to say and conjecture based on the archaeological record. I've seen some people go nuts about the alleged status of women in Sparta and I could argue mightily with you on that.

As for the conversations, yeah, I can relate to both sides of that one. There are people I haven't kept in touch with because every time I let things slip, I end up writing an epic novel in order to catch up. That takes time, which means spending longer before actually instigating real communication. I need to get out of that habit.

I also totally suck about chats. I almost never instigte them, and when I do, I almost always feel instantly guilty for bugging people. For deep down, I believe if they are online when I am, they are busy elsewhere. In several cases, this is actually true. And thus my feelings of guilt are reinforced. Don't take it personally. For lo, I doth suck.

I would love more titles of books on these sorts of subjects. And yeah, obviously most of it is read between the lines sorts of things. I think, over all, she's done a decent job of saying "Other people have said this but I'm going this way because..." And people go nuts over the silliest things. Especially when you're trying to rebuild a record from bits and pieces here and there.

I hate writing those novels. After awhile it becomes much easier to say, "Well, I've been working... and... um.... yeah. Stuff." I always sort of forget what they've missed. It's like finding out someone hasn't seen Back To The Future or something.

Lessee, gonna try to not repeat any of [livejournal.com profile] fixerbard's suggestions, though I second all of the goth/ebm stuff and about half of the metal. (DRAGONFORCE (http://youtube.com/watch?v=p7_JafYlMY8) FUCK YEAH)

ebm/industrial:

Combichrist (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kRa3BU5bl-s)

Assemblage 23 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMcSRMJawx0) (great fan video but pretty low-res)
In Strict Confidence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS-Ny602fYE)
Abney Park (http://youtube.com/watch?v=j6YwyZvFqms)

indie/pop/rock:

Jose Gonzalez (http://youtube.com/watch?v=iB32Qu2OrnU)
J. Mascis (http://youtube.com/watch?v=l1hEumnzFKY)
The Decemberists (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tK3Ce9md96g)
Rufus Wainwright (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vUeL8SGWwSU)
Hum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqJHJQ23jHs) (maybe the greatest rock band that ever lived)
The National (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlSCwpsnrJI) (I LOVE THIS BAND)

Gonna cut it short there...I'm getting too distracted by YouTube.

Some of these I know! I'm not entirely as lame as one might think. (Or, you know, not.) Covenent, Abney Park, The Decemberists and Rufus Wainright are all things I know.

Excellent. I must look and get more, obviously.

Thanks.

Oh, I know that feeling all too well. Sadly, one of said friends I bust my arse to keep in touch with has fallen totally and utterly out of touch. Haven't heard from that friend in well over a year, and all attempts to find a means to communicate have failed. Actually, there's another I have been out of touch with for more than three years. He joined the U.S. Military, and I fear he's no longer amongst the living. I told him it was a bad idea, and he agreed with me later when we managed to reconnect half way through his tour. That was the last I heard from him.

So yes, I most certainly know the feeling of putting more effort into keeping in touch than the other. I'm terribly stubborn and devoted to the people I care about, it's gotten tiring.

*waves* Late comment, I know.. catching up on my friends list!

I know what you mean though.. I'm pretty sure I'm "that friend" to most people I don't work with, and even more so since I started my current job. I think I just have an easier time letting down friends than employers. :P Ahwell.. just had to comment, since I was totally thinking about that lately, having been working so much.
