Date: 2006-07-13 03:45 am (UTC)The single guys in my gaming group frequently ask me when I'm going to get more women into the club. I have thus far avoided asking when they were going to develop the social skills necessary to meet women on their own. ;)
Being the happy Yenta I am, I long ago forced all the good ones onto Match.Com.
Bend to my will or feel my wrath! Now couples outnumber singles.Trust me when I say I have far too much respect for you to foist off our leftovers. You deserve a meaty main course, not scraps from the table.

Date: 2006-07-25 10:22 pm (UTC)Either way... *mutters* I'm not as much that way for the Sumerians as I am the Greeks and the Etruscans and all...

Date: 2006-07-25 10:26 pm (UTC)Etruscans I'll give you, but the Greeks? Babe, you'd be on the second floor of the house, veiled whenever allowed down the stairs, and only allowed out of the house for weddings, funerals, and very rare holidays. The Arabs copied the custom of zenana from their Greek neighbors.

Date: 2006-07-25 10:37 pm (UTC)Enheduana, Inanna's sister, was the Sumerian goddess of the underworld. She was tricked into taking the job, which she utterly loathed. To shut her up, the gods promised she could bail out on policing the afterlife if she had a child. After all, that would demonstrate she was inherently unqualified for the work.
In a show of sheer determination in the face of bad odds, once a year she would pick out a villaige and screw every man in it to death. Earlier, she'd tried going for quality, but that didn't take, so now she was determined to make it work on sheer volume alone.
In a demonstration of ancient comic genius, there are epic poems about women dressing their sons as boys, hiding their husbands under the house, and shoving unwanted fathers-in-law out the door as a sacrifice to the goddess.
THAT's what I call a quality ancient culture. ;)
