I love this book Kris got me for Christmas. I had to stop reading it on the bus today, though. I've gotten to the parts where things are going very, very badly for Joan. Everytime I saw the word fire on the page I had a visceral reaction to it, so I stopped reading for now.
Beaupere: Do you know if you are in God's grace?
Joan: If I am not, may God bring me to it; if I am, may God keep me in it.
I cannot think she was crazy. She answered the questions presented to her with too much grace, wit and intelligence. They tried to trip her up so many times and they failed in the attempt. They failed so much they had to falsify the evidence and chop up Joan's words.
I think I'll finish reading this soon but ... I guess it is better that I already know how it ends.
