While down in California, I hypothisized that I am missing some fundimental girly gene. I don't really like Ani DiFranco or Tori Amos or Sarah McLaughlin. Not really. I won't turn it off if I hear it. I appreciate the talent that goes into the music. I'll even sing along since a lot of the songs fit my vocal range.

I just don't seem to have the reaction that other women I know have to these people. They don't mean anything special to me. I am not 'deeply touched' by them.

I think maybe I traded that gene in for the 'appreciate fast shiny things' gene.

I don't care for Tori Amos and don't know who Ani DeFranco is. Sarah I can handle and even like singing the songs. But she doesn't make me cry. I think I must be missing that gene too. But I'm pretty girly otherwise.

I hate the thought of gender defined/specific artists, you know. Singers for "men" or for "women"

Well, true. I just haven't found much of it that appealed. Alanis made it but I think that's because of where I was at at that point and more than she was a girl, she was angry.

You know, I like Ani and Tori and Sarah, but for different reasons. Yes, I know everyone puts them in the same genre, but they're completely different to my ear/mind. Personally, I don't think it's a girly thing by and large, but there are things that each of them do that seem to tend to put men off, which is IMHO why they get classified as chick music.

Oh, and I definitely have the fast shiny things gene, and the mechanically-ept gene, and the "adrenaline good!" gene.

There were craploads of other female artists at the time (which is a sad statement, because when do people notice that there are craploads of male artists? When will male rockers be put into a "male rock" box? God knows Limp Bizkit deserve to be there.). Tracy Bonham and Shirley Manson/Garbage were far louder (although I suspect "Mother Mother" wasn't truly representative of Bonham ouevre) than the Toris and Sarahs. And then there was Fiona Apple. And Beth Gibbons/Portishead, and Saffron/Republica. And, um, Jewel.

And Evanescence isn't exactly chopped liver.

I am fairly androgynous myself. In fact I think a lot of females are like that. I don't know too many 'girly-girl' types.

I think society attempts to put us in that box where we should have 'girl power' (it's a clever marketing tool btw) and wear pink.

I'm not going to support any artist just because she's a woman, if she stinks, she stinks, end of story.

My attraction to Ani Difranco is because she plays Banjo and so do I, but I don't like all of her stuff. I hate Sarah M. I have to be in a Tori mood to appreciate her.

My favorite chics are Nina Simone, Paula Cole and Etta James. I guess I'm sorta old school.

I think you'd look awesome in jeans, but that's a different topic altogether. Then again, now that I think about it, I can't remember what you were wearing the one time I've seen you. So...

I'll grant you Shirley too. I liked Shirely there for awhile though it was really just for one burst of anger as opposed to a prolonged following.

I like Fiona some, though again it's one song that will catch me.

Evanescence is the one group you've mentioned that wasn't just a one hit pop for me.

For what it's worth, I like all those artists. And I've been called many things, but a girly girl isn't one of them (well, not since grade school, at least).

Obviously, they sing about some things that only women can really relate to, even if anyone can sympathize (sexual abuse, discrimination, things of that sort). I think a lot of women like them because they give voice to things you aren't supposed to talk about, that other women can't or won't.
