Some vaguely related things...

I think I'm added Ben Affleck to the list of people I'd love to sit down and have coffee or a beer with. He seems like a funny guy and talking to him would be great. One of these days I'll actaully have to write that list down.

genre - 1 : a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content
2 : KIND, SORT
3 : painting that depicts scenes or events from everyday life usually realistically

I've been wondering about what conventions make a genre and when can you bring things from outside a genre into it and make it still work. It's obviously a skill and takes some talent to do... I've been thinking about this since I read Jo Walton's dragon book and it has been re-enforced many times since then. There are certainly genre's whose lines are more blurred than others, but how can you tell when you've crossed them? Is it someting you can see for yourself, or is that another thing a proof-reader or editor can do for you?

It hasn't really been cold recently, but it has been that temperature that goes right through me and causes my joints to ache. Meh. I don't think I'll get old. I think I'll just fall apart instead, thanks.

I hate Ben's Sailor Moon calendar. I want to go scribble a mustache on Usagi or something. Why can't they make more Outer Senshi stuff?

Sometimes you can see it for yourself and sometimes it's a marketing decison. Tim Power's "Declare" jumped genre's into the mytery/thriller category while Jasper FForde's "The Eyre Affair," which should be science fiction, is listend in straight lit. For some authors, moving from one genre to another, can be detrimental to their sales so they'll market a book in the genre even though it has no business being there. That all said, If you want any more info, call me. I used to edit and publish sci-fi and horror. I might be able to answer any questions you got.
