A few years ago (after Return of the King, I believe) someone told me that they thought movies would be all down hill from there. And, while there hasn't been any thing in fantasy since then (except maybe Harry Potter) I believe that this will be a hell of a year for movies. Here's a little look at what I'm looking forward to this year. (And, yeah, I'm sure I'll miss a few.)

January
Daybreakers - In the year 2019, an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

The Book of Eli - In the not-too-distant future, across the wasteland of what was once America, a lone warrior must fight to bring civilization the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption, This movie has Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman in it. I'm there.

Legion - This movie is going to be total cheese but I don't care. When God loses faith in Mankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity's only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner and the Archangel Michael, who is played by Paul Bettany. (Which is why I'll see it. That and angels with machine guns.)

February
Frozen - A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for three snowboarders when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that they've been left behind dangling high off the ground with no way down. Now, this isn't something that I have to see but I like a good horror movie and this does sound terrifying.

I Love You Phillip Morris - This movie has been trying to get a distributor for ages and ages. It has Jim Carrey doing, what I'm told, is some fine dramatic acting with Ewan McGregor. Steven Russell, a married father whose exploits land him in the Texas criminal justice system, falls madly in love with his cellmate. The cell mate is eventually set free, which led Russell to escape from Texas prisons four times.

Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief - I liked these books better than Harry Potter. They're quick and enjoyable reads. Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen and they're accusing Percy (Perseus) of stealing it. Wacky hijinks ensue.

The Wolfman - You know the story here. It is Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. Should be a lot of fun.

Shutter Island - I'm not sure on this one but it looks interesting. Scorsese directing and DiCapprio acting. Two U.S. marshals are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Cop Out - The trailer was underwhelming but Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith? Could be Hudson Hawk like. Two longtime NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen, rare, mint-condition baseball card find themselves up against a merciless, memorabilia-obsessed gangster.

The Crazies - A retelling of a Romero original. People in a small town start going horribly, violently crazy for no real reason. It is like a zombie movie, except the people aren't dead.

March
Alice in Wonderland - I wasn't sure but then I saw this was a continuation and not a retelling, so I'm on board.

Green Zone - During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one booby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their mission. Matt Damon doing action is a good way to get my attention.

The Runaways - "The Runaways" were hugely influential as the first successful all-girl hard rock band; its members included guitarists Joan Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer-keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. The band lasted about four years together, falling apart over management and money issues.

Clash of the Titans - Either you're on board after the two trailers or you're not.

How to Train Your Dragon - I'm not sure on this one. Vikings and wild dragons are a good start, though. Another story about a kid who doesn't quite fit in, ending up to be important and challenging conventions.

Frozen sounds like "Blair Witch Ski Trip" which follows not-too-close on the heels of "Blair Witch Beach Trip" (Open Water). I'll probably take a pass at that one.

*chuckles* It might well be. The trailer is not doing this one any favors, I have to admit.
