Apparently he's had a few leading roles in British films, but he's what the mass media will call a 'newcomer', according to Moffat.

Anyway, my first glimpse of him in the Confidential special, I thought, 'This isn't right.' Then I heard him talk, and saw clips of him in some of the other stuff he's done. I think he'll do great in the part.

And he's not *that* young. He's only 3 years younger than Peter Davison was when he took the part.
