More Books!

More books I've read in 2008:

6 - Confessions of a Master Jewel Thief by by Bill Mason and Lee Gruenfeld. Very, very interesting. A lot of being a cat burglar is apparently luck and being able to look at a situation in ways other people don't. Very interesting. There were a few very very touching moments as well.

7 - You Suck: A Love Story by Christopher Moore. This was good but totally short. I finished it on the plane ride down to Vegas. It felt a little lacking to me as well. For whatever reasons I couldn't convince myself to care about most of the returning characters.

8 - Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher. Good book. Liked it a lot. Again, he's telegraphing like whoa.

9 - Academ's Fury by Jim Butcher. Also good. I like his world building. Very solid. Another quick read.

10 - Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher. I can't wait until this gets to the point where the Dresden books are and he's surprising me with things. That will be nice. Until then very solid.

Currently reading - 11. Captain's Fury by Jim Butcher. Only like two chapters into this one but I don't think it'll last the weekend.

I have the feeling that there is a book in there that I missed but I can't remember it right now. I'm still waiting for House of Cards to appear magically in my mail box. Packages and I have been having a really hit and miss track record since moving into the new place.

So apparently I should read Jim Butcher? :)

I agree. "You Suck" wasna't bad, but it wasn't up to Moore's usual standards.

I want to find time to plow through Dan Simmon's "Illium" and "Olympos" some time soonish. Simmons is one of those I have to stop and think while reading, so his books take me awhile.

Have you read any Robert Sawyer? He's all contemporary or near future SF set in Canada (usually Toronto.) He doesn't shy away from complex or uncomfortable ethical issues. Most of his books are really good until the end, when he pulls something random out of his ass.

The end of "You Suck" pissed me off. It just ... blah. It's like it just ended. Like he was tired of writing and stopped the story.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised he came back to that one ten years later but set it immediately after the events of the previous book.

I wonder if it was his idea or if his publisher said, "Hey, this book is still in print. Gimmie a sequel."

I like the Dresden books more than the Calderon books so far but there are twice as many Dresden books out there.... But I'd recommend them, yes.

I love those books. Illium and Olympos made me squeee.

I don't think I've read any Sawyer. I'll look into it.

The Marine was all about Simmons, you know. I've stayed away from him because of it. ;)

I have been too busy writing to get books out this week. I'll package them up tomorrow and put them in the mail Monday. So you haven't missed anything from me, anyway. ;)

That's how I feel about most Moore books... fun enough, but always a little... lacking. It always surprises me that they're in the "Literature" room at Powell's... maybe they just couldn't figure out where else to put them.

He coasts on his zaniness and the books in general lack a certain substance. They're fun fluffy angel-food-cake books filled with empty literary calories.

I actually stayed away because I didn't like Hyperion. ;)

*cheers*

I've been worrying about packages being eaten recently.

Some them I really got into and liked. I really liked Lamb, for instance. You Suck, though, was ... yeah. It felt all sorts of empty and half hearted.

*laughs* Well, he does get a bit dense.

Oh, I don't mean to imply I didn't like the Moore books I've read. I enjoyed Lamb, and Bloodsucking Fiends, and Dirty Job quite a lot... but not enough to keep the books. They're fun and I usually take them back to Powell's when I'm done.
